SAM PRYOR Obituary

PRYOR--Sam, 1928-2014. Samuel F. Pryor III passed away on Friday, October 17 at the age of 86 surrounded by his family. He was born in Greenwich, CT, attended the Taft School, Yale University, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Sally Reese Pryor, his wife of sixty years, survives him as do his children, Sam, Kathy Burgeson, Dan, Joe and Ted, their spouses, and his nine grandchildren. He was a leader in law and philanthropy, a mentor to countless individuals, an author and adventurer. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 1st at 11am at St. Matthews Church in Bedford, NY. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955, and joined the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City in 1956. He retired and became Senior Counsel in 1998. He was a dedicated volunteer throughout his life, assisted many philanthropic organizations working to help people and conserve the environment. He received the prestigious New York Governor's Award for Parks and Preservation, The Land Trust Alliance President's Award, and the Open Space Institute Conservation Award. He was chair of the World Rehabilitation Fund and chair emeritus of the Republican Majority for Choice until the time of his death. He is the author of two books, "Make It Happen," which is a biography of his late father, Samuel F. Pryor, Jr, and his own memoir, "My Interesting Life." In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northern Westchester Hospital and the Westchester Land Trust.

As cousins we emailed each other frequently and I will greatly miss our electronic conversations enormously. He carries with him my highest regard and respect. Sam's contributions to making a difference in the lives of others is his legacy.
