SAMUEL HOCHBERGER Obituary

HOCHBERGER--Samuel Michael. On July 2 in Havertown PA, after a valiant battle of several years with myelodysplastic syndrome, at the age of 90. Predeceased by beloved wife of 58 years, Jane Weiss Hochberger. Longtime resident of Dunwoody Village, Newtown Square PA, and Villanova PA. Adored father of Ruth (Martin Flumenbaum) of New York NY, Larry, of Bryn Mawr PA, and Michael (Shelley Dropkin), of New York NY. Doting grandfather of Martha, David and Judy Flumenbaum, and Nathan, Rachel, Jacob and Eric Hochberger. Predeceased by sisters Sadye Freeman, Agnes Aron, Beatie Minstein and Laura Regenbogen. Born and raised in New York, NY. Proud alumnus of Stuyvesant High School and Colorado School of Mines, where he played varsity football and baseball. Captain in U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre, where he received the Bronze Star for construction of a bridge over the Roer River (Germany) while under mortar and artillery fire, and fought at the Bridge at Remagen. A mining engineer, he built the largest explosives distributor business in Pennsylvania and Maryland, Maurer & Scott, Inc., and Blasting Supplies, Inc. Generous to a fault, rugged individualist, enthusiastic tennis player, intrepid traveler, avid debater of politics, frustrated Phillies and Eagles fan.
