I had Professor Landau my first semester at NYU in 2003 for her Rise of the New York Skyscraper course. It was unlike any other course I had taken or would take, at NYU or elsewhere. We walked the through the city, stopping at buildings for her to note histories and architectural significance of various buildings we had no idea were so significant. Wanting to show us interior details of buildings now newly guarded or better guarded by security she would talk us into restricted areas or simply usher us through with security guards looking on; it was truly an adventure. The course ended with us being assigned a building and us having to research its history via the NYC government, the building management or any resources we could find, culminating in a slide show presentation. To this day I remember the Candler Building in the theater district and point it out to friends/family whenever I walk by. I was recently in the city and remembered Professor Landau and am sad to hear of her passing. My condolences to her family ; she will be remembered by so many of her students as someone who opened up a history of NYC/skyscrapers they otherwise would have been oblivious of.

As an old friend of the Landaus, I have known and admired Sara and her zest for exploring old buildings and architecture. I am saddened by her death and extend my condolences to Sidney , Amy and Paul as well as Paul's children.
