Saul Mendlovitz Obituary

MENDLOVITZ--Saul. The Law & Humanities Institute notes the passing of our Governor, Saul Mendlovitz. His was a voice for legal humanism, peace, and yiddishkeit. His wise counsel over many decades kept us attuned to our mission. May his memory be for a blessing. Richard Weisberg, President

The loss of a peace keeper and intelligent man such as Saul is a loss for the world. Our leaders should take lessons from him. My thoughts are with your family and the world.

I was honoured and always rejuvenated to be a colleague, friend, fellow traveller with Saul when we worked together in efforts to create a UN Emergency Peace Service (UNEPS). More than that I befitted from fellowship with Saul, the self deprecating humour, an unfailing commitment to human rights and to justice, each trait reflecting a judgement made in the poem `Blessed is the Man´ , by the wonderfully eccentric US poet Marianne Moore, `Blessed is the (Saul Mendlovitz) who does not excuse, retreat, equivocate and will be heard... blessed such an author who favours what the supercilious do not favour, who will not comply, blessed the (gutsy principled Saul) an unaccommodating man.´
Sorry can´t attend. Distance should be no impediment but on Sunday Feb 16 I´ll be on Jervis Bay three hours south of Sydney, Australia, but still fortified by memories of Saul. In solidarity and with best wishes Stuart (Rees) founder of Sydney Peace Foundation, Professor Emeritus, University of Sydney.
