SENEN UBINA

UBINA--Senen: Artist, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many died peacefully on September 23rd, at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Senen was born in Santander, Spain in 1921 and came to New York City as a successful artist in 1955, for the first of many gallery exhibitions. As time passed, his work evolved from figurative to the more abstract, gaining him places in many prestigious permanent art collections. Some highlights of his career include winning the Gold Medal at the 1984 Biennale in Alexandria, Egypt, as well as inclusion in important museum collections, such as The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York, The Modern Art Museum in Madrid, Spain, and The Museum of Art in Houston, Texas, as well as exhibitions, including The Spanish Pavilion at The Biennale in Venice, Italy in 1962 and 1968. In 1968, Senen was decorated with The Order of Isabella the Catholic (Orden de Isabel la Catolica), a civil order granted in recognition of exceptional services that benefit the country of Spain. In 1972, he founded Arteguia Magazine, the first independently owned guide to contemporary art in Spain. In New York, Senen was on the art advisory committee for the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute. Senen was the beloved husband of Joy White Ubina, to whom he was married for 47 years. He lived in Manhattan and enjoyed his daily routine of going to his studio to produce his work. He is survived by his wife, Joy, daughter, Victoria Ubina Katzburg and her husband, Peter, sons, Senen Carlo Ubina and his wife, Elaine and John Edward Dani, and his grandchildren, Maria Elena, Senen, Julio, Alberto, Mary Alex, Alexander and Joy. Senen's life will be celebrated at a service on Friday, September 28, at 4pm, at St. Vincent Ferrer, 869 Lexington Avenue at 66th Street.
