Sidney APPLBAUM Obituary

APPLBAUM--Rabbi Sidney, passed away on Friday afternoon, June 18, in New Brunswick, NJ. Born in Bentlyville, PA, Rabbi Applbaum grew up in Williamsburg, NY and was ordained at Yeshiva Chaim Berlin. He was appointed spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Judah in Brooklyn in 1947 and served there until his retirement in 1995. Rabbi Applbaum was instrumental in building the modern orthodox Jewish community both locally and nationally, establishing the Vaad Hakashruth of the Vaad HaRabanim of Flatbush in 1951, serving for 45 years, and founding the Tripartite Commission on Jewish Funeral Standards, of which he was chairman for 35 years. He served as Vice President of the Rabbinical Council of America for four terms. Rabbi Applbaum was predeceased by his first wife, the former Tovah Toporovsky. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Carol Stone Applbaum, his four children, Yaakov Nisan, Alisa Weinrib, Isaac (Yitz) and Kalman, and ten grandchildren, his two stepsons, Elihu and Maurice Stone, and six step-grandchildren. Interment is Monday 3:30pm in Eretz Hachaim, Beit Shemesh, Israel. Shiva at 11 Mount Court, East Brunswick, NJ Tuesday through Saturday evening.
