There was always a Sidney Rogak in our family. He knew me from birth.
My sister Dolly, Sid's wife, was 21 years older than I and was dating Sid for years, as a young girl. She was madly in love with him and he with her. She used to find him waiting on her doorstep when she returned from work at C.B.S. Broadcasting, every day. When the second world war broke out, they married and he went off to Europe. She saved his letters from those times for her whole life.
I remember as a child, Sidney coming up to Bethlehem, N.H (where my family summered), with Dolly and the kids and he loved taking them to the lake and having picnics. He loved cooking on the grill, fresh picked corn, hot dogs and burgers. He adored those times and would have loved to take his wife and children and keep them on top of a mountain forever, away from the world.
Sidney used to play softball at Lincoln Terrace Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. He started a team with all of the neighborhood guys, including my brother Sonny Storob. Everyone knew Speedy. Later, he opened up Speed's Sporting Goods, on Pitkin & Saratoga Avenues in Brooklyn, N.Y., a shopping mecca. Everyone went there for their sneakers and club jackets.
Sidney was immaculate. He always had a closet full of beautiful suits and shirts, even in the old days when most Brooklynites were struggling. He worked for a coffee importing company and went to work dressed fastidiously every day.
Way before there was a Starbucks, Sid knew how coffee should taste and taught us all the should and should nots of coffee preparation.
It's hard to imagine the world without Sid in it. He will be missed.
