Simon Shaw Obituary

1973 - 2017
Simon Timothy Shaw, of Brooklyn, died on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017 at Memorial Sloan Kettering after battling melanoma for more than two years. He was 44.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1973 in Yeovil, England, the oldest of three brothers. He graduated from University of Bath with two degrees in architecture, and established his progressive approach to design during his eight years at Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects, a firm with a reputation for design excellence and environmental expertise.

In 2005 he moved from London to the US, where he worked at Architerra (Boston) and Beyer Blinder Belle (New York). His professional life was dedicated to sustainable design and adaptive reuse projects. One of Simon's most notable design contributions was the SUNY ESF Gateway Center in Syracuse, which was designated a 2014 AIA/COTE Top 10 Green Building, and received 10 design awards.

Simon is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte Rose Barrows, their daughter, Gemma Voizey Shaw, and by his father, two brothers and eight nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father.

A memorial service will be held Feb. 6, 2017 at 12 p.m. at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights.

Life presents an endless opportunity to meet others. From birth to our passing, we cross paths with folks who may or may not become a part our own existence. Sometimes we bump into an old friend from long ago. For a few moments we will reminisce of the time that has passed.
Then there are folks who come into your life and never leave. Simon is that person. It's difficult to explain why there is a deep sense of loss for someone who I knew for such a brief time. I suppose it is because Simon was so openhearted. He made everyone feel important and special in his life when it was us who couldn't help but appreciate this engaging, thoughtful, smart and truly joyful man. Our prayers are reserved for Charlotte, Gemma and Simon's entire family.

Within the past few weeks, one of my colleagues at the State University Construction Fund had reminisced and commented upon what a delight and privilege it had been to work with Simon on our Gateway Building at SUNY ESF in Syracuse. He was the platinum standard in professionalism and how to conduct oneself and inspire others. I'm certain that those of us that have been fortunate enough to have crossed his path will remember him fondly for many years to come and appreciate the legacy that he has left behind. Please accept my condolences for your loss, which is shared by many.

Deepest sympathy and prayers to Simon's family and friends. Didn't know him very well, but he was always very helpful when the Gateway Center was being built on the SUNY-ESF campus. RIP, Simon!
