I could never imagine climbing a mountain. As a Girl Scout, I wasn't much into hiking.

However, as someone with disabilities, who thrives on sharing life stories through my poetry, I know how it feels to know when you have truly inspired someone. Most of these people, you never meet in person. Yet the few that you do, will be remembered for a lifetime.

From my poem "Anything Is Possible" come these words, "...Be the first in your family to travel the world! Go anywhere and be anything you've ever believed in your heart! For in our dreams, anything is possible!" I wrote this poem in May of 2007.

I would wish to share a very personal remembrance with all of 'Sir Ed's' family and many, many friends around this world!

You see, I was born into a world where the conquering of Mt. Everest was still fresh and as incomprehensible to a wondering humanity as was the lunar landing of sixteen years hence.

'Sir Ed' and Tenzing Norgay were it's greatest and most renowned heroes.

Fast-forward twenty plus years...I met 'Sir Ed' in November of 1973 at his appearance in a lecture given in 'Cutting Hall'...located in Palatine, Illinois.

His gracious autograph is among the very most cherished 'keepsakes' of my own life...but even more so...I remember him for his unbeleivably inspiring words, his contagiously 'folksy' demeanor and wonderfully genuine...yet warm, gentle and humourously self-deprecating wit and humor...for his kindly attention and the generous amount of time he extended to greet...to shake hands and to talk on an individual basis while sharing some refreshments...with those who wished to meet him...just following the conclusion of his presentation.

The MAIN focal point of 'Sir Ed's' presentation could not have made a greater impression upon his audience...for it was NOT at all about 'himself'...it was about his WORK...his efforts to help others whom in the course of his travels and exploits...he had discovered had some very great needs!!!

...What a vigorous, vital and LASTING impression this GREAT MAN had made! To me personally...(and I know that I join with many, MANY others spanning the entire breadth of this world who must share this identical sentiment)...he will ALWAYS remain..on a deeply personal basis...the greatest explorer who has ever lived!

But it is NOT for his accomplishments that he will be held forever to be a man of such stature (fully and truly deserved as they are)...but rather for his supreme, unspoiled HUMANITY...his astonishing and natural humility...even more astonishingly that he NEVER allowed his accomplishments to alter his personality or to in any way adversely-affect his ego!

Here, truly...if it can EVER be claimed..was the GENUINE...the truly worthy hero of his times...and perhaps of any time!

May God's grace rest you from a long and active life in humanity's service, Sir Ed and may he shower you with his blessings...the greatest of all, perhaps...being a re-unification wih your dear Wife and Daughter!

May you and Tenzing be loved, revered and remembered for your gift and legacy of great inspiraton and hope to this world's people...many long ages after the great mountain you both so bravely conquered has been worn to (its) inevitable stature of becoming a mere foothill!

i can't even think how it would be at standing on the tallest mountian in the world, the fresh feeling of the coolness of the fresh air, to think of being the one who made it all the way up, how long it took to climb,i know how it is to climb summits, i've climbed the white mts, it is just beautiful, i had a hawk fly around a friend & i as we sat on the mt near unity, VT, then years later i climbed clark summit, in N.H. i climbed clark summit 3 times, it isn't as tall as MT everest the one ed climbed, still you felt you were on the top of the world & all the trees were those little green specks down there. i had got to the top of clark summit and i had been standing there looking at the veiw, this was in febuary, and i lost my footing and fell off the side of the MT, i went off of the side of clark summit on my tummy, under branches and ect, it was so fast, i came out of it with just a couple of brusies & an experience to talk about it, besides that, i was away from the people i climbed with & lost in N.H. and it was getting night fall, i followed the power lines out, they were aways from me. i got out safey. one climber to another, breath taking. Ed will be missed. God Blessed. Kath Dunn.

My condolences to the Hillary family, and the great people of New Zealand. Sir Ed was always a person above all others. As a child I was so intrigued by him that my life has always revolved around mountaineering and climbing. But he was much more than that. His caring for the environment, and people, is something we can all learn from, especially my fellow neighbors in the USA. It gives me hope to know that someone as descent as Sir Edmund Hillary was with us, and is now watching over us. God Bless.

Early in my life my mother had told me of Sir Edmund Hillary, as it is Sir Edmund and I share something. He had conquered the highest mountain and that was the day I was born, May 29, 1953. I had always hoped to have met Sir Edmund one day and so now I will have to wait just a bit longer. Seeing the pictures of him and from others who sucessfully conquered Mt Everest really put everything in prespective. Nothing could be more challenging then to climb the highest mountain. It makes the daily hurdles of life seem small. After seeing the Mt Everest movie in a Imax theater that is when I really felt like I was there.Thank You for showing me that I can achieve anything that I set out to do. My sincere sympathy to the Hillary family.

Sir Edmund Hillary has always been at the top of my list of Heroes. since the day that he and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest in May, 1953.
Forty years later, it was a great honor when I was inducted into The Explorers Club as a National Fellow, but that honor waned when I met the President of the Club, it was none other than my hero Sir Edmund Hillary.

Sir Edmund became Honory Chairman of the Club in his later years.
The Explorers Club Membership card that I carry in my wallet includes a message of safe conduct from Sir Hillary, and it states:
"The individual whose name appears on this card is an elected member of the Explorers Club. In the name of exploration, please grant all possible assistance and protection to the bearer."
Signed: Sir Edmund Hillary, KBE

Sir Edmund has gone to that great summit in the sky, but I know he is looking down on me and granting me protection in my explorations as I search for the truth.

I was 10 years old, living in England in a small village. My grandparents were the first people in our village to have a television, rented for the Queen's coronation.

We heard about the wonderful news that you and Sherpa Tensing had climbed that mighty mountain and we were so in awe of you both.

We were so proud when Queen Elizabeth knighted you, an honor so well deserved.

Reading about it in newspapers and books and the beautiful photos of your incredible journey was fascinating.

You have accomplished many wonderful things in your life. Now it's time to rest, I feel honored to have seen your achievement in conquering Everest, it must have been a wonderful feeling looking down on the world.

God bless you and your family.

God's Blessings to Sir Edmund's family and friends. I can vividly remember reading the story of how he summited Everest, from his perspective, back when I was a sixth grader. Just last week I was looking for it on the shelf at Barnes and Noble for my own sixth grade son to read...I will definitely have to find a copy now so that my children can also learn about one of the world's truest and finest legends!

One of the saddest days in my memory. Sir Ed was an inspiration to my generation, both to those of us who climb and those who do not. A clossus among men whose humanitarian heart was as great as his many personal achievements. I attended a lecture by the great man in the seventies and was particularly moved by his humility. A true example of the goodness of the human spirit which will be sorely missed and even more difficult to follow.
My heartfelt sympathies to all his family both in New Zealand and Nepal. Rest in peace Sir Ed,

To the family of Sir Edmund Hillary:

May the Lord keep him and may he rest in peace. I admired him since childhood and his feat was great, but I always was fascinated by his photos of the footprints of the "Abominal Snowman" or Yeti that circulated around the world.

Thank you Sir Edmund Hillary for the memories.

I several times saw Mt. Everest from thousands of miles away, and every time thought of Hillary and Tenzing climbing to that windblown summit. From where I stood, the mountain was the size of a pencil eraser, the humans on it invisible. What an awesome feat, for the times and the technology as it then existed.

Rest in peace, Sir Edmund.

HOW clear, how keen, how marvellously bright
The effluence from yon distant mountain's head,
Which, strewn with snow smooth as the sky can shed,
Shines like another sun--on mortal sight
Uprisen, as if to check approaching Night,
And all her twinkling stars. Who now would tread,
If so he might, yon mountain's glittering head--
Terrestrial, but a surface, by the flight
Of sad mortality's earth-sullying wing,
Unswept, unstained? Nor shall the aerial Powers 10
Dissolve that beauty, destined to endure,
White, radiant, spotless, exquisitely pure,
Through all vicissitudes, till genial Spring
Has filled the laughing vales with welcome flowers.
