Rabbi-Hazzan Arnold Saltzman

Cantor Mendelson was an excellent teacher at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He took a personal interest in my development as Hazzan and was the first to offer work to me either singing in chorus for services, or special programs with outstanding cantors. He was a genuine mentor and friend who made possible my singing at the Knesseth in Israel in 1987 for the opening of the 1st international cantors convention, as well as singing a Shabbat Morning Service in the Conservative Synagogue in Jerusalem. I treasure the photos of me singing in front of the Chagall Tapestries in the Knesseth with Cantor Mendelson standing next to me along with the TV camera broadcasting to all of Israel. On a personal note, he called me on a regular basis to see how I was feeling, especially when he visited Hopkins in Baltimore for his own treatment. Of all my colleagues, he was the one who consistently took an interest in my health, my family and my professional work. He had a beautiful, contented and peaceful quality about him because he was happy in his married life, his family and his career. He encouraged many creative works of great distinction and was the type of person who was mentor and friend for life. I am grateful to have known him and bless the memory of his dedicated life.

Fond memories of early days at East End Synagogue with Cantor Mendelson. Choir practice, bar-mitzvah lessons. I will miss him.

A true friend, a great teacher and leader, but most of all, a contributor to Jewish culture and a devoted supporter of the State of Israel. May his family be comforted by the knowledge that his influence will be an indelible part of the tradition of his people.

Sol was one of the most charismatic people I have ever met. Despite spending very little time with him, seeing him in Israel and NY over the last 30 years or so, he was often in my thoughts. He will be missed by our family.

Solomon was a Tzadik, and a brother and friend to me. We spent many years supporting each other in Long Beach, NY. I will miss him and his always available advice and counsel . His memory and the deeds he did will enrich my life and the lives of many others !

Cantor Mendelson taught me to lein Torah and lead shacharit for my bar mitzvah. Forty years later, I continue to serve my synagogue in that capacity every Shabbat.
