Sophie Kalina Obituary

KALINA--Sophie (nee Rottenberg), age 95, passed away December 23. A determined, courageous woman, devoted her life to preserving Jewish culture and Israel. Born Warsaw, daughter of Rabbi Abraham Rottenberg and Mrs. Sarah Rottenberg. Brilliant student, lawyer, her true career-because of rising anti-semitism and wartime upheavals-became Jewish resistance and service to Israel. Cherishing and cherished by her late husband Michael, met in the Polish resistance, where he was a leader, they endured many horrific adventures together and separately to fight German injustice and war crimes. Resettled in New York after the war, they only had several years together ended by Michael's untimely death from cancer. Sofia loved the arts, especially theater, ballet and classical music, was also an avid bridge player and reader, maintaining all these interests until 90. Despite ravages by strokes her spirit and determination remained intact until her death. She was charitable above all else. The last several years of her life were blessed by the constant, devoted care and company of a dear friend, and her companion and health care giver. Through them Sofia amazingly glowed with health and happiness. The spark of her spirit will never die. May those who remember and honor her carry her spark with them all the days of their lives. Lois Adams, former neighbor, friend
