STANLEY TANGER Obituary

TANGER--Stanley, Greensboro, NC, age 87, died peacefully of natural causes on October 23, 2010 surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Doris Tanger for 63 years. Son of the late Harriette and Moe Tanger of Wallingford, CT and brother of Lois Magid and the late Renee Lowenberg. He is lovingly survived by his wife, his sister, his children Steven Tanger, Jane Black, and Susan and Joseph Nehmen, his grandchildren Marcie and Jordan Pantzer, Laurie Nehmen, Jason and Amy Black, Stacy Black, Schuster Tanger and Andrew Tanger and his great-grandchildren Annabelle and Charles Pantzer. Mr. Tanger will be remembered for founding Tanger Factory Outlet Centers in 1981. He is widely credited with creating the first factory outlet strip shopping center in Burlington, N.C. Under his leadership as the President and CEO, the company became a publicly traded REIT on the NYSE in 1993 and he received the Inc. Magazine Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Real Estate in 1994. He was a member of the Young Presidents' Organization and the World Presidents' Organization. Mr. Tanger will also be remembered for his lifelong commitment to philanthropy. Along with his wife, Mr. Tanger donated to many charities including the American Cancer Society, receiving their highest honor, the Excalibur Award seven times from 1994 to 2004. He also generously donated to Duke University, supporting the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, Duke Eye Center and the Iron Dukes and was a major donor to the Moses Cone Cancer Care Center expansion. Mr. Tanger donated the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden and numerous sculptures in the garden to the City of Greensboro. In 2010, Mr. Tanger received the McIver Medal from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the Ben Cone Award from the Greensboro Jewish Federation. Mr. Tanger was an Eagle Scout and awarded the Silver Beaver Award on February 11, 2004. In 2000, he donated Lake Tanger to the Old North State Council for the North Carolina Boy Scout Camp. Mr. Tanger served as a pilot in WWII. He adored flying planes, cars and chocolate chip cookies. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 25 at Temple Emanuel, 1129 Jefferson Road, Greensboro. Burial followed in the Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Emanuel. Online condolences may be made at www.haneslineberryfuneral-homes.com
