STANLEY TURECKI Obituary

TURECKI--Dr. Stanley. Dr. Stanley Turecki, Child, Family and Adult Psychia-trist, was born in Vilna, Poland, on December 22, 1938. He passed away in New York City on November 17, 2023, at the age of 84. Dr. Turecki was a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He attained national prominence in 1985 with the publication of "The Difficult Child," a groundbreaking book about the essential role that temperament plays in parenting and that sold well over 500,000 copies. He lectured across the country, and his views were featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles. His many radio and television appearances included those on Oprah, Good Morning America and a segment on 60 Minutes, which was devoted entirely to him and his work. He was the Physician in Charge of The Difficult Child Center and continued his private practice work until his death. A world-class bridge player, Dr. Turecki was chosen by The New York Times as Player of the Year soon after he emigrated to New York from South Africa, where his family had settled after World War ll. Dr. Turecki had been a hidden child in Poland during the Holocaust. Dr. Turecki is survived by his wife, two daughters and a stepdaughter, as well as by his patients to whom he dedicated his life. As one of them said upon learning of his death: "News of Dr. Turecki's death leaves a hole burning in my heart. Memories of our work together and its profound impact on my life will always be with me." A celebration of Dr. Turecki's life will be held at a later date.

Sorry to be so tardy with this message. Dr. Turecki's book "The Difficult Child" was a huge help and inspiration for parenting a "Difficult" child who today is a successful artist. (I still have the information his office sent about a visit,) May his memory always be a blessing.

Dr Stanley Turecki was an inspiration to me in the 80´s with two children whom I was befuddled by. He helped our family immensely! He helped me with my book about kids and clothes, generously correcting a chart I made up about the effects of temperament on kids behavior around clothing. He was a true innovator who loved children. Never to be replaced.
