STEPHANIE SCHIFFER Obituary

SCHIFFER--Stephanie Gertler, on January 7 in New York City at age 62. Beloved wife of Mark Schiffer, cherished mother of David, Ellie (Lawrence Brotherton) and Ben, adoring grandmother of Oliver, loving sister of Jonathan, devoted daughter of Menard and the late Anna Gertler, survived by sister Barbara Victor. Stephanie was a force of nature, and it is impossible to imagine a world without her in it. An award-winning journalist and best-selling author, she loved good books, music, dance, cooking and great conversation - but her family was her true passion. She faced her illness the way she lived her life - with grace and courage. We are grateful to Linda Kirschenbaum, M.D. and the gifted doctors and nurses of Lenox Hill Hospital, who gave us the precious gift of more time with Stephanie than anyone thought possible. She will live in our hearts forever. Burial was private. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring. Donations in her memory can be made to Lenox Hill Hospital Medical ICU.

To the Shiffer and Gertler Family,
I was stunned and saddened to learn of Stephanie's passing in my local paper this week in Western Mass.
Steph and I were best of friends as we entered puberty and progressed into our teens. I have many fond memories of her. She was and will continue to be a significant person in my life's tapestry.
My thoughts are with you as you cope with this huge loss.

I hadn't seen Stephanie since the '70s, and only stayed in touch with her occasionally via social media, but I'll never forget our time together at Hewitt. I have a special memory of her at her parent's apartment, where I'd marvel enviously at her lovely singing and guitar. In particular, I still remember Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". She touched a lot of people with her many gifts, and she truly is one of those people whose spirit will endure. You are lucky to call her family. As I recall, when her mother died she appreciated a quote I cited from Queen Elizabeth, who said after 9/11, "Grief is the price we pay for love." I hope that thought provides solace to all of you.

I miss you Stephanie. Thank you for the laughs, for the cries, and everything in between. Thank you for your encouragement, for believing in me even when I didn't believe in myself. You were my protector, my confidant, my best friend.. I can't imagine life without you. Love you.

Stephanie, my sister, and I shared a love of drama

Stephanie was brilliant, kind, steely, and stellar. My twin sister and I were friends and schoolmates with her back in grade school, and I always admired her work ethic, diverse talents, and especially her way with the written word. Our lives took different turns and we drifted away from each other as adults, but reconnected from time to time over the phone or via Facebook. I got a kick out of telling her that every time I turn on my Kindle, her book "Jimmy's Girl" is always the first title I see on the home screen. It was a joy to view the photos of her children and grandchildren that she posted on Facebook and feel her love for them radiating off the page. She is gone way too soon, but will be remembered with love and admiration by her legions of friends, fans, and devoted readers. Heartfelt and heartbroken condolences to her bereaved family.
