STEPHEN RAPHAEL Obituary

RAPHAEL--Stephen M., age 82, died in New York City on September 12, 2024. He was born in Brooklyn on November 9, 1941 to Gladys Dorman and Benjamin Raphael, both lawyers. A graduate of Poly Prep Country Day School, he earned a BA at Columbia University, a JD from Harvard Law School and a Masters in Tax Law from New York University. After earning his law degree, Stephen moved to Alabama where he taught at the University of Alabama and worked in support of the civil rights movement. Upon his return to New York City, he established a law firm, which later became Raphael and Marks, in partnership with his wife, Ellen Marks. Throughout his life, Stephen was devoted to Brooklyn, both personally and professionally. A real estate developer who converted many brownstones in his beloved borough, Stephen was foremost a preservationist, serving as Commissioner to the Landmark Preservation Commission of New York City, legal advisor to the World Monuments Fund, a member of the Law Committee to the Municipal Art Society of New York, and a member of the Board of Trustees of The City Club of New York. He was an adjunct professor at New York University, where he taught urban development and environmental law and a long standing member of the Century Association. Stephen is survived by his wife Ellen, his sons Adam and Fred, his stepchildren Andrew and Gigi, his grandchildren Sophie, Sasha, Gabriel, Robin, Fiona, Jake, Lilly, and Sammy, and great-grandchild, Emmett. A funeral for Stephen was held on September 16, 2024 at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn, in loving memory.

Stephen was my favorite law professor and my friend at the University of Alabama. He was a delightful human being. I am sad to learn of his passing. He had a good heart and is in a good place.

Dear Ellen and Family,
We are so deeply sad to hear that Stephen is gone...we had been hoping against hope so much to hear better news. It was only a month earlier that we had talked about seeing you two out here sometime, and where we would go to see the sunset off the coast.
We have known Steve through so many years, he has always been the greatest joy to speak with, in person, at meetings, on the phone, and even after we moved away, at such long distance, what an amazing treasure of a mind!
We could always find wonderful topics for wandering conversations, no subject untouched, and he had the most incredible gift of storytelling and connectivity, of analysis and advice, and an ever-present overriding sense of humor.
He left on the same day as my father, only years later, so it is a great double loss, to me and to the world, that day will be one of immense loss, and yet with immensely grateful memory. Our love to you,
Gilly & John

I met Stephen while serving on our coop board. Over the years, we had many conversations that began with coop business and often moved on to topics like politics, travel, Broadway, and the history of New York City or Brooklyn.
His advice was thoughtful and practical and he had a way of getting to the crux of any topic. Stephen was fascinating to talk to, and he had a great sense of humor. Before I called him I would set aside a block of time because I knew we would go down one rabbit hole or another and time would fly.

I will miss him.

It makes me so sad to hear about Stephen's death. It was so nice of him to help me out with the sale of my brother's house over the past year. I know it was a frustrating real estate sale for him. I really appreciate all that he did for me. I am so glad that I got to meet him in person at the closing on July 30.. The reason I picked him as my lawyer was because of his interest in the preservation of NY landmarks. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Thanks Stephen.

I was a law student at University of Alabama when Stephen invited me to move to New York for a summer program in Brooklyn converting abandoned apartments into condominiums for the poor. What an amazing experience! I have spent hours telling my golf buddies stories about that summer. We had a lot of fun together both there on Hicks street, Brooklyn and also Tuscaloosa Alabama. About two months ago I had a sudden urge to call him but the number was disconnected. I hope he knew how much he meant to me and many others in Alabama. William Youngblood Mobile AL.
