Stephen Saul Obituary

SAUL--Stephen Henry, Ph.D. Scholar, Teacher, Humanist, died peacefully at home in Honolulu of AUL on August 29, 2007. He was recently retired as Associate Entomologist/Professor with special expertise in genetics from PEPS (Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Services) in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Born in Brooklyn in 1941, Stephen was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School as a National Merit Finalist with achievement awards in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics; Brooklyn College; and the University of Rochester. He was awarded New York State Regents Scholarships for College and for the study of Medicine. He was a member and living example of the ideals of Alpha Phi Omega, the national service fraternity, and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. Prior to moving to Honolulu, he was a Ford Foundation Fellow in Population Biology at the University of Chicago, and Visiting Assistant Professor and Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Vector Biology Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame. Stephen read extensively in cosmology and had deep respect and reverence for the nature of both the physical and biological world. As a biologist he fully understood the natural cycle of life, including the role of death in perpetuating the cycle. His message to family and friends is that he was fortunate to have had a very good life; he was grateful for being able to experience so much that was professionally and personally rewarding. For him, everyone mattered and every being was important. His keen intellect and inherent idealism propelled him to pursue a life of continuous learning on a wide range of subjects outside of science including history, literature, philosophy and the arts; he was always ready to share the resulting knowledge and understanding, doing so most often with disarming wit and humor. He found the engaging response of his students most gratifying. Stephen served as President of the Pacific Orchid Society of Hawai'i, and led discussions with other devotees of classical music as the FEMLS; he particularly treasured the friendships forged through such shared interests. A kind, appreciative and loving person, Stephen gave freely of himself. He will be deeply missed and remembered by many as a bright light in their lives. The insights and sensibilities for which Stephen was so admired, were considered by him a continual gift since his early years to the present from the family he loved: grandparents David (deceased) and Irene Saul (deceased); parents Jerome (deceased) and Lottie Saul; aunts and uncles Gertrude (deceased) and Sydney Peimer, Bernard (deceased) and Helene (deceased) Saul, Marian and David (deceased) Lubin, and Robert (deceased) and Elaine Saul. He is survived also by wife Alice Saul of Honolulu, HI; brothers David N. Saul and wife Susan of Wayland, MA and Arthur D. Saul and wife Mary Ann of Dix Hills, NY. Memorial Service Thursday October 4, 2007 10:30am Oahu Cemetery Chapel, 2162 Nuuanu Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96817 Telephone: 808-528-3441
