STEPHEN SCHWARTZ Obituary

SCHWARTZ--Stephen. It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of our partner and friend, Stephen Schwartz, who as president of the Brookdale Foundation for more than four decades helped reshape healthcare for older adults and their caregivers across the United States. As head of the Brookdale Foundation, Mr. Schwartz directed philanthropic investments that helped establish and guide the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, now the nation's largest and most influential program of its kind. His vision and funding spurred innovations in clinical care, education, and research, laying the groundwork for advances that have touched millions of lives. It is no exaggeration to say that Stephen Schwartz revolutionized how we provide care and how we experience aging in this country. Mr. Schwartz was generously involved in civic and cultural life. He served on the Mount Sinai Health System Board of Trustees and held long- standing roles with NCH Healthcare System in Naples, Florida. He and his friends, Jay and Patty Baker, established the Baker Senior Center, which now provides state of the art care for older adults in Collier County. He was widely admired for his integrity, wisdom, visionary philanthropy, and wry sense of humor. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Lety Schwartz; his daughter, Karen Hart; his son-in-law Stephen Shaffer; his grandchildren Daniel, Julia, Robert, and Jennifer. R. Sean Morrison, MD, Ellen and Howard C. Katz Chair; Albert L. Siu, Chair Emeritus; and the faculty and staff of the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai
