I was driving through lower Manhattan today and something in the neighborhood prompted me to recall a time when I was helping this guy named Steve Bernstein gather supplies for a Lawyers Guild fundraising event in the mid 80's. I recall Steve stopped the car, stepped into an old deli and came out with two chocolate egg creams, handing me one - the best I ever had. I knew Steve for all of five or six hours. But that nearly 40 old encounter conjured up the memory of a bright spark of an exceptional human being. A quick search led to this site. If a single day with Steve left a positive association lasting four decades, his memory must be a profound blessing for countless others.

Dear Marcia and Charlie,
I only met Steve a few years ago, at my dining room table over lasagne, wine and good conversation; but it was as if I had know this gentle soul forever. He was the brother I never had, the amazing defense lawyer I had been loking for for years--and it was if we had been in each other's lives forever.
He loved you dearly Marcia and Charlie he adored you. You both were his reason for being--he was gentle spirit, fierce fighter for rights of the poor, a great friend, a great man--a dear brother, fellow Bronxite and bagel master. My heart has a hole that no one will fill. We were blessed to know him.
Love you both,
Kris

The last time I saw Steve he was delivering me bagels straight from H&H in New York. I remember such a friendly, warm, sincere, open, altruistic human being. My prayers are with you and your son, I wish I could do something to take away the pain. Love, Iris

In the short time he was in Colorado, he touched many lives. He was enthusiastic at the most difficult times. And he was a wonderful role model of what a husband and father can be.

Steve lived his life with enthusiasm and grace. He had a wonderful presence, a sunny smile and touched us all. He was a courageous, principled lawyer who
sought and won justice for his clients. He was a good friend whose gentle ways and keen wit will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Marcia, Charlie, and all of Steve's family.

I am so sorry to hear the news of Steven's death. I truly enjoyed meeting him and working with him, albeit on a small scale, when he was at DU. He had so much energy and was so kind to me. I won't forget him.
