STEVEN FERRIS Obituary

FERRIS--Steven,

of New York City and East Hampton, New York, died on April 5, 2017. Born in the Bronx in 1943, son of Jack and Dora, he attended Stuyvesant High School and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and received his PhD in Experimental Psychology from the City University of New York. A renowned researcher in the field of Alzheimer's Disease, he spent 43 years at the NYU School of Medicine, where he was the Friedman Professor of Psychiatry and the Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Center. A devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather, Steve was adored by wife Arlene, sons David and Marc, daughters-in-law Catherine and Amy, sister Susan, and grandchildren Simon, Sophia, Tyler and Leo. He had a gentle manner and reserved disposition but a great zest for life. He loved Mickey Mantle, long days at the beach, tennis, skiing, gardening, outdoor showers, the latest high-tech gadgets, foreign films and getting pushed into the pool by his grandchildren. His kind heart and generous spirit will be deeply missed.

Steve was a force in the field of Alzheimer's research. He was a great mentor to many in the field, he was inquisitive, fair and added brilliance to any discussion. He will be missed deeply by the Alzheimer's research world, and by the many patients and families that he helped through his hard work and dedication to the profession. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends, Diana Kerwin, MD

Jack and I will always remember with laughter and love the many adventures we shared over 40 years of friendship. And what adventures they have been.... on sea and on land! We will miss Steve so- but his legacy, energy, humor and love of life will be with us always.

Steve was my one and only brother. We were close in age but spent the last 56 years living far apart. In spite of the distance, our shared childhood and parents kept us connected and we were always available when needed (caring for aging parents) and for the special times, such as the weddings of our children. Steve was always helpful and generous, to me and to my children when they visited him. We never had an argument or a fight of any kind all our lives, which is unusual for siblings. I had a wonderful brother and will miss him for the remainder of my life. My only regret is that he died too young.
