Stuart Kellogg, of Apple Valley, California, 63, beloved partner, brother, uncle, writer, artist, bibliophile, and rights advocate, died August 3, 2011.

He is survived by Fernando Torres, his partner of 26 years; his sister, Nancy Lightbody, and his brother, David; his nieces, Anne and Lisa Lightbody; and his nephews, Matt and Ben Kellogg. He was the son of the late George Dwight Kellogg, Jr., and Wynne Krementz Kellogg. Stuart was a cum laude graduate of Groton School and Yale College.

He was managing editor of The Journal of Homosexuality and editor of The Advocate, the human rights magazine, in the early 1980s.

In 1986, Stuart joined the Daily Press, where he worked until 2007. As a features writer, he wrote "A Dry Heat," a column about the extraordinary stories of the people of the High Desert.

He edited the books "Literary Visions of Homosexuality" and, with Hunter Lewis, "The Essence of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics." He recently completed, with Sarah Baxter, his first novel, "Clarissa, or the Fun of Reading Other People's Mail."

There will be a celebration of Stuart's life at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church on St. Timothy Road in Apple Valley on Saturday, August 27th, at 11am. A reception will follow the service.

Fernando: I am so very sorry for your loss. Though I was only worked with you both for a few months, you and Stuart left an enormous impression on me. You made a wonderful team together and made the Daily Press so much more welcoming as a result. Stuart was a tireless writer and tenacious about details. I'm sure he brought every ounce of that to battling his illness, as well. All my best.

Stuart changed my life when he took notice of a poem I once wrote in high school and he interviewed me for his column when I thought my writing had no promise. I am thankful for having had the opportunity to encounter his warm soul.

What an incredible man! We loved his column in the paper. The first time he mentioned my name, I was so excited. His intelligence was astounding. Fernando, I'm so sorry. He will be missed by all.

Stuart, you were the kindest, most loving and smartest man I've ever known. I feel so honored that your last words to me were "I love you." I love you too. Take care of Wyatt for me till I get there.

I met Stuart only a few times, when his sister married my brother John; his wit and way with words portrayed a caring man, who will be missed by all who knew him better than I, but also by those of us with a thinner thread of connection. My heart goes out to Fernando Torres, and to Nancy and David and their families, but also to the Apple Valley community. He made a difference, and will be long remembered.

Dave and I were so sorry about Stuart's passing. We know how very dear he was and to this day miss his column in the paper. His way with words is rare in today's world and will always be remembered. Reading "A Dry Heat" always put me in a good mood! It was always fun to run into Fernando and Stuart in Phelan and brightened our day. Our deepest condolences on his passing.

A dear man with much feeling and care for all who had the privilege to know and work with him. He always had time for a chat with his wonderful smile and laugh (his laugh is something I will always remember). Stuart was my "go-to" "wordsmith" when I'd get stuck and without fail he always knew just what I was looking for..........Stuart left a definite mark in the high desert. For those of us who knew him personally we will think of him often as we gaze across the desert and see the Joshua Trees he loved. Rest well Stuart.

I count myself as blessed for having known Stuart. He was one of the few people who truly made this world a kinder, funnier, better place. Our loss is heaven's gain. Love to his family and especially his partner, Fernando Torres.
