SUSAN LYALL Obituary

LYALL--Susan,

died peacefully at home in Bedford Hills, NY, on June 6th with her children by her side. Born on June 12th, 1935, she worked over the years as a journalist, an organic-farm owner and a garden-furniture designer. An unforgettable woman of great wit and originality whose generosity touched many lives, she loved Africa, her dogs and her grandchildren most of all. She is survived by her son, David; her daughter, Sarah; her daughter-in-law, Blanche Belliveau; her stepsons, Philip and Adrian Utsch, and nine adored grandchildren and stepgrandchildren: Louise, Charles and Adelaide Lyall; Alice and Isobel McCrum; and Josiah, Lucas, Phoenix and Wyatt Utsch. A private service of remembrance will be held July 21 in Northeast Harbor, Maine. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Lewa Nature Conservancy. http://www.lewa.org/

I will never forget Susan and Folly Farm. Looking back it was a dream that very few chefs could ever hope for. Picking from seed catalogs with Cindy and Steve and flying up from New York to visit, plan parties and help out at the House was a dream come true. Flying to Kenya to cater the official opening of Kifaru - Never to be forgotten! Susan...you were one in a million!

Susan was a mentor, an inspiration, and a true realist. Her presence emitted grace, wit, kindness, and simple elegance. We will always remember her "little girl voice" and the smile that brought joy and a reason to make her happy. Her love of Africa and her organic farm, "Folly Farm" had a common thread, as she seemed to venture forward to help make her world a better place in the time she had. It was a great pleasure and honor to be her Folly Farmers, growing for MDI and her favorite restaurants in New York City, and what an adventure it was.

She will never be gone for us, for everytime we plant a seed, we think of her, and we plant many seeds
