SUSAN SOCOLOW Obituary

SOCOLOW--Susan Migden. Hugely intelligent, loving, and beautiful, Susan passed away on the eve of July 21, 2023 at 82, at home in Atlanta with her husband Daniel and before Alzheimer's could rob her of her identity and raison d'etre. Born in Manhattan April 16, 1941 to Edith (Ginsberg) and Sigmund Migden. Susan met Dan in Asuncion, Paraguay and married in Buenos Aires December 21, 1965, knowing one another a matter of days. Strongly independent, she successfully fought against social and intellectual barriers with an unwavering will, bolstered by a B.A. from Barnard, a Ph.D. from Columbia, and an intense belief in her own purpose. Author and co-author of multiple books and articles on the social history of colonial Argentina and Latin America, she was Chaired Professor of Latin American History at Emory University and lecturer in residence for five years at L'Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales in Paris. Elegantly multi-lingual, she lived and lectured frequently throughout the United States, Latin America and Europe. Augmenting her scholarship, Susan was also an experimental designer of elegant jewelry. Loving mother of Ari and Joshua, mother-in-law of Jennifer, former mother-in-law of Ellen, grandmother of Sasha, George, and Olivia, sister of Stephen (Sherry) and Deena (predeceased), close aunt of Jocelyn, and sister-in-law of Joan (Irwin) and Robert. Susan raised the bar for all she touched.
