Ted was a major influence on my life and career. He he succeeded the long time head of Tech [I still call it Tech] Henry Boetcher. He mentored me constantly from first years to his passing. [1957-1961] and years later when he joined the NYU Theater Dept. in 1964, the year after my Fulbright to Jacques Lecoq in Paris. He was instrumental in bringing Carlo Mazzone-Clementi to Tech. I was Carlo´s shadow for 40 yrs...thanks to Ted´s inspiration to have learn what Physical Theater was all about instead of ballet. Ted came to Paris when I was studying chez Lecoq and when I returned to the US we would have dinner many times in the Village called Arlequino. He was a true visionary and reputedly a "ladies man" too. He inspired so many of us even after he retired to warmer climes for his health. All of us "Dramats" owe Ted our careers and our love of theater to this day.

To me, Ted was one of the best teachers I've ever had! He opened up the world of movement theater that Jacques Lecoq pioneered in his new wave mime school in Paris. It was like taking all the good parts from theater and putting them all together. Three Penny Opera, Wozek, Jerzy Gratovski and his Polish Laboratory Theater, etc. them all at Ted's instance. And I was influenced for the better thanks to Ted whose radar was un-erring always! I owe him because I became a juggler who learned about the circus and treated it as an art form and not merely a popular entertainment. I eventually found that confidence to direct the Pickle Family Circus for 4 years! Thank you, Mr. Hoffman! I will never forget you!

In 1957 [I was 18] in my freshman year at "Tech" and Ted called me in to his office. It was a surprise as I thought I had done something wrong. Called in "On to the Carpet". He said, "Arne, you are going to have a career in the Theater, but Edith [the voice and speech teacher] wants you to shave off your mustache! All I heard was that I was going to have a career in the theater. And I refused to shave my mustache. His prediction came true. Thank you Dear Ted.
And Ted´s prediction came true.

Theodore Hoffman - the faculty Ted assembled in 1966 was phenominal. It was an honor to know him and hear his brilliant lectures about the exciting influences in the modern theater. He had a great wit and razor sharp sense of humor. He was warm and wise. His instincts were keen, his knowledge immense. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Thank you for everything, Ted.
