TERI SLATER Obituary
The Historic Districts Council and New York City's preservation community mourn the passing on January 13, 2015 of our dear friend. Teri was a passionate preservationist, committed community advocate and fierce defender of her beloved Upper East Side. Longtime community board member, director and officer of HDC and numerous other preservation and community groups, she served the public with dedication, intelligence and passion tempered with grace, caring and humor. She was pivotal in numerous campaigns to protect her neighborhood from inappropriate development, especially from institutions such as hospitals and museums seeking to build enormous and unnecessary expansions. She was a convener of groups and connector of people. Her absence is unimaginable. She is survived by her sons Eric and Edward and all the many people whose lives she touched.

TEri was one of those people we could least afford to lose. Perhsps her sons will carry on some of her work, I can only imagine the personal loss to them and i send my most heartfelt sympathy.

It is hard to imagine that we will never again see this intelligent, vibrant, ethical, committed woman. She was unyielding in her dedication to the protection of a built environment that is not available to the highest bidder, but a place where continuity of ideas mattered.
We already miss Teri and her spirit - SPIRIT - the word that characterized her in my mind.

Terri was always thoughtful about other people and their ideas. Firm in her convictions, Terri was quick to adopt another's approach on the rare occasion that it was better than hers. And, Terri did it with a smile. Rarely speaking of her own problems, she was a helpful listener to those of others. In so many ways, what an example Terri set!
