TERRY KOPPEL Obituary

KOPPEL--Terry Ross. July 27, 1951 - May 8, 2021. Terry Koppel, graphic designer and art director with a 40- year career spanning influential periods at The Boston Globe, Koppel & Scher, Esquire, Time Inc. and decades teaching at the School of Visual Arts, passed away May 8, 2021, of myelofibrosis, a rare cancer of the blood. Outrageously funny, inherently stylish, and completely visual, Terry was a painter, photographer, and passionate collector of great art and design in all forms. He possessed an enduring wild streak that propelled his rebellious youth, his successful boxing career (41-1 am+pro), his MFA in painting despite a haphazard relationship to school, and his predilection for canny provocation even in adulthood - he was a bad boy made inarguably good. His kindness, generosity and sense of humor gave him an ability to connect with anyone and made everyone feel cool by association. Terry loved New York, Muhammad Ali, baseball, dogs, dessert, pizza, The Prisoner, and Arthur Lee & Love. He leaves his wife Susan Welti, son Willem Conrad Koppel, niece Blaise Allysen Kearsley of Brooklyn, and a large and loving extended family in Seattle.
