A gentle intelligent lawyer that was always willing to spend time with a less-learned collegue. He will be thought of as the standard for Criminal Lawyers for some time!

Having been at the receiving end of Tom Ashley's penetrating and incisive cross examination, I would often say "Ashley made me a better detective..." The legal profession lost a giant. And his family lost a consummate gentleman and renowned human being. RIP my friend.

I started working with Thomas Ashley back in 1995. I volunteered my time with Connie McGhee while attending Paralegal school. When an opportunity arose for a legal assistant. I was offered the position. It was a great learning experience for me. He was a brilliant attorney and a wonderful person. My condolences and prayers are for his children, wife, family, and friends. May he continue to rest in peace.

During the summer of 1975 I was co-counsel with Tom Ashley and Oscar Gaskins in two criminal cases in the superior Court of Morris County, N.J. Before the Honorable Bertram Powlow. Our clients, members of the National Caucus of Labor Committees led by Lyndon LaRouche, had been charged with transporting weapons from NY to NJ. The first trial ended with a hung jury. The second trial ended with guilty verdicts for two defendants and a not guilty verdict for one. The convictions were later reversed by the NJ Appellate court.
I spent almost a month in court daily with Tom, who led the defense. He dominated the courtroom, conducted superb cross examinations with brilliant summations and was a master strategist. Tom was also a pleasure to work with! He was extraordinarily intelligent, knew the law better than anyone and had a fantastic sense of humor! Tom was a genuine humanitarian who, when confronted with injustice of any kind or type, set out to patiently but vigorously right the wrongs. Tom and I remained friends for many years. I still visualize him, as a lion of the defense bar, fearlessly standing up for the oppressed underdogs of society. He was a relentless and very effective advocate! May Thomas R Ashley Rest In Peace!
