THOMAS BLUMBERG Obituary
BLUMBERG--Thomas Alan. Thomas Alan Blumberg, a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and beloved friend, died peacefully on July 4, 2025, in New York City. He was 91. He is survived by his three children Betsy, Karen (Jonathon Shaevitz), and Ben (Sue Blumberg); his adored grandchildren Emily, Rachel, Caroline, Jack, Sam, Rebecca, and Lena; and his great-grand- children Zachary, Hayden, and Eleanor. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Elaine "Lanie" Blumberg. Born on January 19, 1934, in Brooklyn, Tom lived a life filled with love, purpose, humor, and generosity. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1955 and served as a Communications Officer in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG). After completing his service, he joined Leviton Manufacturing Company, where he rose to become Group Vice President and Principal. He was respected for his intelligence, fairness, and deep sense of responsibility. After retiring from Leviton, Tom embarked on what he often called his "life's passion" as a professional volunteer. For over 25 years, he dedicated himself to the Jewish community in New York. He served on the Executive Committee and Board of UJA-Federation of New York, chaired Hillel International, and was deeply involved with the Jewish Community Relations Council. His dedication to nurturing future leaders led to the establishment of the Blumberg Family Young Leadership Award, an enduring legacy of his passion for mentorship. Tom had a remarkable gift for connection. He made friends wherever he went, always ready with a story, a thoughtful question, or a perfectly timed joke. On Halloween, he could be found dressed as a pink flamingo, a pirate, or M'lady, delighting his grandchildren and baffling his neighbors. He was an avid music lover and dancer, with eclectic tastes that spanned rock and roll, blues, musical theater, classical, and Yiddish songs. He loved to travel, especially with Lanie by his side. Together, they explored the world with curiosity and joy. They played on the beach together as small children and shared their fondness for beach vacations with their grandchildren. As a lifelong New York Giants fan, he had season tickets dating back to the original Polo Grounds and continuing through the new stadium. There was nothing that he loved more than enjoying the games with his family. Tom's defining qualities were his warmth, his wit, and his generosity of spirit. His was a life well-lived and well- loved, and he will be dearly missed. Tom's funeral will be held at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 10am with a private burial to follow. Shiva will be held at Tom's apartment on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, from 4pm-7pm with a shiva minyan at 6pm. Donations in his memory can be made to JCRC New York or Hillel International.
