THOMAS DEWEY Obituary

DEWEY--Thomas E. Jr. Age 89, died on December 6, 2021 peacefully at home. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and forever New Yorker. Elder son of former New York Governor Thomas E. and Frances H. Dewey, he was predeceased by his brother John. Born in New York City, he grew up in Albany and Pawling. He was graduated from The Albany Academy in 1950 and Princeton University in 1954. He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army for two years in Germany. He attended The Harvard Business School and was graduated in 1958. He then joined the investment banking firm of Kuhn, Loeb & Co. He became a partner and served on the firm's executive committee. In 1975, he founded his own financial services firm, Thomas E. Dewey, Jr. & Co. and, subsequently, co-founded McFarland, Dewey & Co. He continued with business projects, working well into his late 80s. He served on numerous boards, including The Apple Bank for Savings, Northwest Natural Gas and The Scripps Research Institute. He also served as Vice Chairman of the New York City Housing Development Corporation from 1972 to 1989. Beginning in 1959, he served Lenox Hill Hospital as an active Trustee and was Chairman of the Board from 1982 to 1993, thereafter serving as Chairman Emeritus. His family will forever be indebted to Lenox Hill Hospital for the quality of care he received in the last several years. Thomas Dewey was a man of deep integrity, a high sense of duty, unfailingly honest, courteous and kind. Reserved, he conveyed personal dignity and authority, while remaining always optimistic about people, life and even politics. He loved New York, state and city; the city for its endless swirl of business, for The Metropolitan Opera, where he was a box holder from 1971 until the present, for WQXR, which was never off, for his beloved Mets, and for its infinite selection of wines; and the state, for his childhood in Pawling and happy summers in Scarborough. Believing in continuity, he was Board Chairman of his Manhattan co-op from 1975 until his death. He loved living and left a lasting lesson to those closest to him that life, like family or learning, is always worth the fight. There will never be another like him. He will be deeply missed and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann R. L. Dewey; his children, Thomas E. L. Dewey, Elizabeth D. Grattan and George R. Dewey; and his grandchildren, Frances K. Dewey, Thomas D. Dewey and Charles J. Dewey. Services at St. James Church will be private and gifts may be made in his memory to Lenox Hill Hospital, 130 East 59th Street, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10022 or the Metropolitan Opera, Patrons Office, 30 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023.
