Thomas Halket Obituary

1948 - 2021
Thomas D. Halket of Larchmont, NY died November 24 after a short illness. Born in NYC on July 20, 1948, he earned BS and MS degrees in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was elected to Sigma Xi, and a J.D. from Columbia Law School where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and an editor of The Columbia Journal of Environmental Law. While at M.I.T., Tom met his future wife Amy at a Wellesley College mixer.

Tom and Amy skied together and with their children in Vermont and across the world. Tom loved to travel and experience food and wine. He brought home whatever could be packed in the luggage and shared the bounty at dinner parties with family and friends. An opera-lover and audiophile, Tom built his first sound-system from scratch and kept his ticket from Woodstock.

A distinguished lawyer, Tom used his science training in his practice, which was divided between corporate and commercial technology law. He was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law where he taught courses on international arbitration, licensing, and intellectual property and entrepreneurship law. Tom was instrumental in the establishment of a week-long Columbia Law School/Chartered Institute of Arbitrators course on international arbitration. He was counsel to Ferdinand IP Law Group, was a founding member of Halket Weitz LLP, and a partner at Bingham McCutchen LLP and Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP.

Tom was an international arbitrator and mediator for over thirty years. He was a fellow, Chartered Arbitrator, and President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, a panelist of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals and of the Tech List of the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center. He was Chair of the American Arbitration Association's Section of Science and Technology, a member of the International Arbitration Club of New York, and a panelist with the London Court of International Arbitration. Tom was a sought-after speaker and co-authored and edited several books on arbitration.

Proud of his Scottish heritage, Tom was the 100th President of the Saint Andrew's Society of New York. He was instrumental in establishing an ongoing relationship between The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow and New York Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. He loved M.I.T. and served as the President of the M.I.T. Club of New York and on the board of the M.I.T. Alumni Association.

Of all his accomplishments, Tom was most proud of his four children, Jonathan (Maria), Andrew (Brenna), Douglas (Emily), and Jenny, and his six grandchildren, Penelope, Raia, Theodore, Harrison, Lachlan and Noah. He is survived by Amy, his children, and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the M.I.T. Alumni Fellowship Fund for Physics at giving.mit.edu/thomas-halket

Dear Jenny, I only just found out about Tom's passing. I am shocked and sorry to learn of it. We had met a number of times in different cities during his term as President of CIArb and I was Chair of CIArb EAB. I last saw Tom when he was with you at St Andrews Square in Edinburgh, I believe you were both having a stroll after an arbitration conference he and I had been speaking. My heartfelt condolence, he was a good and well accomplished man. RIP Tom. Mary Thomson

My profound condolences to the Halket family. I only learne dof his passing a few minutes ago.

I met Tom years ago when he arbitrated a case I was litigating. Over the years we became friendly and worked together on some projects. I appreciated his cool head in business and quick wit when breaking bread.

He was always carrying on about his kids and their accomplishments. The best advice he gave me was when we were dispatching our children to college. His advice: "a train is better than a plane."

May his memory be a blessing to you for now and evermore.

Dear Jenny,
I was very very saddened to learn today of the death of your father. As another of the Presidents of CIArb I had the pleasure and honour to get to know Tom over more than 15 years. We met on many occasions in London and a few times in New York as well as CIArb events around the world.
We shared a love of politics and had many a debate over a good meal about the quality (or lack of quality) of the current crop of politicians on both sides of the Pond. We had some memorable meals including the strongest Martini I have ever consumed in New York while I was president in 2015 - after the second drink we had little difficulty putting resolving all the world's problems!
We also shared a love of history and Tom gave me insights into the US Civil war battles and battlefields that were authoritative and truly interesting.
Tom was a great anglophile and I like to think we had our own "special relationship".
I shall miss our conversations and dinners when he was staying at his club in St James's.
Helen and my children join me in expressing our sadness at your loss. Please pass my condolences to your mother and the other members of the family.
Tom was a lovely man, a wise counsel and a true friend. The Institute has lost one of its greatest advocates in north America. I would love to meet any of the family when you next get the opportunity to come over to London.
Dear Tom - rest in peace.
Charles.

My sympathies for your loss. We were honoured to have Tom Halket attend and speak at the inaugural APAC Regional Conference in Singapore in 2019. I had the pleasure of sharing a dinner of chilli crab with Tom and others that evening. He was a delightful man. So sorry for your loss.

It is with both sorrow and disbelief that we face the prospect of not having with us, going forward, the energy, enthusiasm, good humor and good will that has defined Tom. He brought these and other precious qualities to every enterprise he touched. We all have our meaningful bonds with Tom, but for me and others it was his having inspired and gotten off the ground the annual international arbitration course that the New York Branch of the Chartered Institute offers and in which Columbia Law School (of which Tom was of course a graduate) has had privilege of being partner.
Tom livened every room he entered and his ever-vivid presence will stay with us.

A true asset to the St. ANDREW'S SOCIETY OF THE STATE OF NY. A leader and stalwart supporter. May he rest in peace. He will be missed and remembered.

I had various dealings with Tom, particularly when he was President of CIArb. He was knowledgeable and invariably courteous. Thomas Halket will be sadly missed.

I worked with Tom on his new book on arbitrating international IP disputes. It was an honor, and indeed so much fun, working with Tom, who was the editor.
