THOMAS MORRIS Obituary

MORRIS--Thomas Q., MD The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) and NewYork-Presbyterian community mourns the death of Dr. Thomas Q. Morris by celebrating a life well lived through innumerable contributions to our institutions and generations of our students, trainees, physicians, and staff over the course of 50 years. He served in multiple leadership roles: president and CEO of Presbyterian Hospital; acting chair of the Department of Medicine; vice dean; and senior associate vice president for health sciences. During his time as president, Dr. Morris helped grow the hospital's presence in Northern Manhattan to provide exceptional care to more patients in the community, including the opening in 1988 of what is today known as NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. He was a trusted friend and mentor to many, and he had a lasting impact on medical education through his administrative roles, including course director for the third-year clerkship in the Department of Medicine; director of the Student Health Service for the medical center campus; chair of the Curriculum Committee; director of the "Introduction to the Patient" course; and interim dean for clinical and educational affairs. Dr. Morris was honored with numerous awards during his five decades of service to Columbia. The standard he set for excellence and compassion is a gift that continues to inspire and motivate us all. My deepest sympathy for your loss. Dr. Morris was a wonderful friend and colleague. It was a pleasure getting to know such an exemplar leader. I admire his expertise and support of the mission of NYAM. My heart goes out to the family. Dr. Morris will be missed dearly.

A friend and well known colleague from Bellevue, Harlem, and CPMC.. We both owe much to Dr. Charles Ragan whose chief resident Tom was in 1960. Tom was always attentive to others and a fine person. I am sorry for your loss. We who were at Columbia's First Medical Division in the 1960's were all close.Tom once told me he was also close with Dr. Dickinson Richards who directed First medical Division before Ragan and was a Nobel Laureate in Medicine. As Tom put much time into Beirut , Lebanon and its university hospital I gave him my father's book on practicing gynecology in Beirut from 1933-1948 and Tom wrote me he found it interesting. In recent e-mails we shared memories of people we knew many years ago.
