TOBIAS BERMANT Obituary

BERMANT--Tobias J. died on March 17 in New York City after a brief illness. He was 97. Born May 10, 1924 in Brookline, MA, he graduated from Brookline High School, Williams College and Harvard Law School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the China-Burma-India Theater on liaison teams under the Chinese Combat Command. During the Korean War, he was an attorney with the Petroleum Administration for Defense in Washington, D.C. Later he joined the law firm of Meyers and Batzell, Counsel to the Flying Tigers Airlines and the Independent Refiners Association of America. In New York City, he was a partner at Sabin, Bermant & Gould, Counsel to Advance Publications, Inc. An associate member of the Overseas Press Club of America, he sponsored a scholarship there with his late wife, Eva M. Bermant, in memory of her former husband, Emanuel R. Freedman, a longtime Foreign News Editor of The New York Times. Mr. Bermant was a trustee of the Walnut Hill School, Natick, MA. After retirement, he served as Deputy Commissioner of the New York Office of Labor Relations and as an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University Law School, Newark, NJ. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Jane Newhouse, with whom he had two daughters, Julie and Amy; by Ronay De Bruegere, from whom he was divorced; and by his wife of thirty years, Eva M. Bermant. In addition to his two daughters, Julie Lobel and Amy Adler, he is survived by his stepson Eric M. Freedman, stepdaughter Alix M. Freedman, and his grandchildren: Barnett, Isaac, Jonathan and Sarah Lobel; Jill and Emily Adler; and Emma Paltrow. Private service and interment.
