Todd Bergman Obituary

1941 - 2012
Todd Lawrence Bergman, of Chatham, NJ, passed away at the age of 70, on Friday, January 27th. He died at home surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life service has been planned tentatively for late March.

Todd was born in New York City on March 25, 1941. He graduated from Carle Place High School in 1958. Following graduation he gained an appointment into the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1962 and went to Ranger school in Georgia soon after, earning his distinctive Ranger tab. He was deployed to VietNam from 1967 to 1968 where he served with the First Infantry Division, the "Big Red One." Todd was honored to have been appointed to the ultimate assignment for an Artillery Captain: Battery Commander of D Battery, 1st Battalion, 5th Artillery, the Alexander Hamilton Battery. Todd retired from the military holding the rank of Major and received numerous decorations, including two Bronze Star Medals, an Air Medal, and two Commendation Medals.

Following his military career, he obtained his M.B.A. at the University of Chicago and worked for several financial firms, including Duff and Phelps in Chicago, and ultimately Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York, where he was an oil industry analyst from 1979-2000, from 1997 on as a Managing Director. His business destinations–Madrid, Oslo, Buenos Aires, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, to name a few–were as enthralling as the close professional relationships he cultivated in those cities. In between the eight marathons he ran over his life (Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC and the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis-St. Paul), he enjoyed curing jet-lag with routine 4AM jogs, be it in Singapore or New Jersey.

He will not only be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, but as an avid reader, wine enthusiast, skier, passionate traveler, and coach, among other things. His trademark modesty, kindness, and subtle wit were equally balanced by his achieving spirit and pursuit of excellence. He met his wife and soul mate Marti in Hawaii in 1963 while stationed at Schofield Barracks. They enjoyed their retirement years between homes in Honolulu and in New Jersey near their children.

He is pre-deceased by his father, Lawrence Bergman, and his sister, Nancy DelVillaggio, and is survived by his mother, Ruth Bergman, 97, of Largo, FL; his loving wife, Marti Bergman, of Chatham; brother, Christopher Bergman, of Smithtown, NY; daughter, Kristin Bergman Anderson, of Mendham, NJ; three sons: Andy Bergman, of Chatham; Peter Bergman, of Cleveland Heights, OH; and Ben Bergman, of Providence, RI; and a generation of loving grandchildren: Mitch, Jay, and Mylee Anderson; Charlie, Andrew, and Kylie Bergman; Eliza and Daniel Bergman; and Caroline Bergman. He leaves behind an array of cherished friends from New Jersey to Hawaii, especially the West Point class of '62. Donations in Todd's honor may be made to: Happiness Is Camping, a free summer camp for kids with cancer and survivors http://www.happinessiscamping.org.

We miss your wisdom. I always wonder, what would he think? How would he handle this or that. What would he do? You were the best role model to have around.

Dear Marti,

In the office Todd was well liked and recognised for his kind, uplifting demeanour. But we all know that behind every great man there is a great woman. So, thank you for keeping him on an even keel back then. All his coworkers benefitted from your support.

With all the turmoil in the energy market, Todd's point of view is greatly missed. Few understood the international energy industry like he did. He would of known what was coming next and what to do.

It's sad that we can't reach out to Todd and share.
But one thing that springs to mind and characterised him was the fact that he always put his family first, no matter what. And, he was always available, no matter how busy he was.

Christine Tiscareno

January 31, 2021

Todd was one of the kindest most generous people I've come across. He was always ready to help you, no matter what was going on in his life. He was always available, regardless of is workload. He always had a smile, no matter what problems he might have had. But what I remember the most, is how much he loved his family. They were always at the forefront of his actions, in everything he did.

christine TISCARENO

Todd was extremely generous. He was not afraid of sharing his knowledge or giving his time, no matter how busy he was. Also, he liked to share his love of history with others and everyone always found an excuse to visit his office. You always felt upbeat and happy after talking to him. He is missed.

Dear Mrs. Bergman (Marti) and family:

I have just found out the terribly sad news and I'm truly sorry for your loss. Todd was my first boss, at Goldman. He gave me my occupation, my livelihood; but most importantly, taught me a set of high moral standards and values that I have never re-encountered. He was one of the kindest, most decent people I have ever met. He has always been an inspiration, as a professional and as a human being. The world will miss his smile and joie de vivre. May his memories sustain you.

February 27, 2012

Dear Mrs. Bergman, I will never forget the kindness and patience your husband showed me as a lost analyst starting in the equity markets, trying to find my way. As a friend of Andy's, he was always more than willing to indulge and mentor me. He did it with such aplomb, never making me feel embarrassed as I asked what I didn't know. The way he carried himself, his compassion, and his encouraging demeanor will be some of the things I will always remember...and of course, that ever present smile. - Scott Craven

Dear Mrs. Bergman,
It has been many years ago, but I was a good friend of Todd back in the 80s when we worked together at Goldman, and I was very sad to hear the news. Todd was one of the most helpful and pleasant persons I ever worked with there. It was a pleasure to travel with him, to meet clients with him, and often to have dinner with him. Looking back on "so long ago", I remember him very fondly. One of my favorite friends, for sure! I wish the world have more wonderful people like him. With much sadness,

Dear Marti and family:

Todd hired me for my first job, but that is not what I remember and thank him for. Rather, it will be his kindness, warmth and smile. I learned more from him in the years I worked with him than I have subsequently. The world is a much better place from his being a part of it.

With my deepest sympathies,

Dear Marti and family,

Todd was one of the finest human beings I have ever known. I had the pleasure of working with him for many years and without question, Todd was the best of the best as a Petroleum analyst. However, most importantly his honesty, integrity, character and always treating his fellow man with kindness and respect are a few of his qualities I will always cherish. My heartfelt prayers and condolences are with all of you.
I am very fortunate in having had Todd pass through my life and being my friend.

I feel truly blessed to have known Todd and to have been a good friend for 53 years. Our friendship was forged at West Point - and from that there developed a common bond. While his achievements, both in the Army and in the financial industry, were most impressive, his self-described legacy is that of a proud and loving husband and father. Todd, my friend, you are missed. Be thou at peace.

To the Bergman family - Todd worked in the next office to mine for years in the Goldman Sachs research department. He was such a special person. For a man with such a lifetime of incredible achievement and honor, he was astoundingly humble. He also had a remarkable equanimity and humor even under the most trying circumstances. I really missed him when he retired from GS, and am so sorry for your loss.

February 4, 2012

Marti and Family- Todd and I were classmates at West Point. Being in the same half-regiment, we were in many of the same classes and that is how I got to know Todd. Our career paths took us in different directions and we had not the opportunity to meet again. However, even after nearly 50 years, I still remember Todd's engaging style and warm smile burned vividly in my memory. From the West point Alma Mater are the words..."and when our work is done, our course on earth is run, may it be said WELL DONE, be thou at peace". And so, Todd Bergman, be at peace. You have earned it.

October was always a special month because we knew the Bergmans were coming back to Hawaii and we could start planning our dinners, golf outings, beach visits and whatever else we decided to do. Even though Todd was one of the "cousin clan" that conspired against me to put olives in my soda at Thanksgiving celebrations, I always remember his kind, gentle nature and the absolutely amazing relationship he and Marti had over the years. He was taken away too soon but he certainly left an impressive legacy behind. The annual Bergman Christmas picture almost needed two cards to show his beautiful, loving clan...how much better can it get than that? My deepest condolences go out to Marti, Kristin, Andy, Peter and Ben and their respective spouses as well as to Aunt Ruth and Cousin Chris.

Todd Bergman was a wonderful man - it was an honor to have known him, and worked with him over the last year. He was a "gentleman" in every sense of the word - with a witty sense-of-humor! And truly devoted to Marti, and all his family. Cindy Edgar (Chatham,NJ)

I will miss seeing the big smile and cheery outlook of "Mr. Bergman" (as I still called him out of habit) - at baseball and soccer games for my and Andy & Kate's kids, at Cougar football stadium, and at all the Bergman family gatherings that I crashed. He was a great dad and grandfather, a role model and friend to me and others outside the Bergman family, and just a kind soul. I am thankful for having known him.

Bergman Clan - Christa and I are so sorry about the loss of your father. Every time we met him he was such a friendly, warm and caring person always asking about what is happening in our lives. We can only imagine your loss. You and your families are in our thoughts and prayers!

Todd was an intelligent, elegant man with a gracious, ready smile. He was the older cousin we enjoyed looking up to, from his West Point days on. He was lucky in love, and knew it. He will be missed by many.

What I will remember most about my Uncle Todd is what a full life he lived. He was successful not just in his career but more importantly in enjoying his life and the great relationships he created in it. He is an example to all of us and will be very much missed. All my love to my cousins and to my Aunt Marti.

Mr. Bergman was a truly inspiring man. To say it was an honor to have spent time with him and his family is a grave understatement. I am very fortunate to have had him as a kind, wise and loving part of my life during some very difficult, formative years. I send my deepest and most sincere condolences to his wonderful family.
