TOM DRIVER Obituary

DRIVER--The Rev. Dr. Tom F., on July 12, 2021. Eloquent theologian, teacher, author, theater critic, preacher, peace and civil rights activist. First Paul J. Tillich Professor of Theology and Culture, Union Theological Seminary. Tom's distinguished career united three key areas: the intersection of theology and culture; ritual, religion, and theater; and the advocacy of nonviolence. A pacifist since his 1946 Army discharge, Tom was tirelessly active on behalf of peace, justice, and human rights in Haiti, Colombia (about which he made two documentaries with his wife, historian Dr. Anne L. Barstow), and the U.S. He co-founded Senior Advocates for Justice in Hightstown, NJ, and its Black Lives Matter Committee. Tom is survived by his wife, children Kate (Paul Murphy), Paul (Rebecca Boyd), and Susannah (Philip Christopher), grandchildren Daniel, Kevin, Aidan, and Grace, step-grandchildren Nils Aspengren (Kayla) and Lena Collins (Zack), and great-grandchild Kinsley. Contributions may be sent to the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship.
