VALERIE GALE Obituary

GALE--Valerie Chapman. Valerie Chapman Gale, 90, formerly of Scottsdale, Arizona, died on Saturday, April 1, 2023. Valerie was born in Jersey City, N.J. on September 2, 1932 to Norman Nathan and Gertrude (Aronson) Chapman. A diligent student and gifted pianist, she graduated with an AB from Finch College, a Masters of Education from Tufts University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia Pacific University. As an undergraduate, she met her future husband, Alan B. Handler with whom she had three daughters, Nicki, Carolyn and Julia. As a young educator specializing in early childhood development, she founded the Peter Pan Playhouse in Union, N.J and the Nursery School program at Kent Place School in Summit, N.J. Later, moving to Tucson, AZ, with her beloved second husband, Roger S. Gale, whom she married in 1971, they founded Roots & Wings Inc., a community based counseling and human betterment agency which was recognized as a presidential Point of Light. Val was a tireless and trusted coach and counselor to those wishing to improve their life skills, never turning away anyone for lack of funds. She enjoyed entertaining in her home making sure all were welcome, particularly during the holidays and her standing Sunday dinners at Nee House ("no Chow Fun!") never disappointed. Val actively participated in her Fellowship and Men's Group meetings up until the time of her death. She will be deeply missed by her brother, Philip L. Chapman; her children and their spouses/partners, Stancy, Sally and Chloe and the many whom Val helped during her life and who became lifelong friends. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later time.

Val was a joy, a gem, and a guide thru life. We challenged each other, supported each other, and held one another accountable to high standards as counselors and servant leaders. We met Val and Roger in 1989, when they were still in Tucson, in the early years of Roots and Wings. We spent an amazing week together, brainstorming, planning, developing, laughing, & eating very well. They were a fixture in our lives for 30 years. We miss them both and wish them a magnificent journey through the cosmos into their expanded consciousness. Thank you Val (and Roger) for being wonderful friends and encouragements in this world. You are always a point of light in our sky.

Val's smile entered the room 10 minutes before her! I will miss our chats. I just wish I had more time to tell her how much she meant to me.

She could read the room in an instant. Her strength and kindness made life more manageable and hopeful. She gave and never asked for anything in return. She laughed and loved with integrity, wit, intellect, and talent. She was so generous and kind and gracious. She was direct, compassionate, and loving. Oh, heavens-we have lost one of those rare people who left a wake of hope and optimism. "You have to try," she said. "You can´t quit," she said. "Love matters," she said. My heart aches for her. What a friend-

She made my life better. She made the world better. She was this extraordinary force of love, hope, and talent. She was an American Point of Light and was honored by President Bush. In truth, she was a universe of light, intelligence, and compassion. My broken heart misses her deeply.
