VED MEHTA

MEHTA--Ved, (1934-2021). After a difficult and, in many ways, miraculous life, Ved Parkash Mehta died peacefully at home from complications of Parkinson's on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Born March 21, 1934 in Lahore, when it was still part of the British Empire, he lost his sight from meningitis just before his 4th birthday. He proceeded to study in Bombay and Arkansas, and at Pomona, Oxford and Harvard, before joining the New Yorker as a staff writer in 1960. As a writer, he published 27 books, 16 of which have been recently re-issued as e-books by Penguin. Ved will be remembered for his humor and wit, wisdom and courage. He is survived by his wife, Linn Cary Mehta; two sisters in India, Promila Mehrotra and Urmila Singh; his daughters, Dr. Natasha Mehta and Sage Mehta Robinson; her husband, Michael Robinson, and their two daughters, Marina and Phoebe Robinson. Gifts in Ved's memory can be made to Balliol College, Oxford or to PEN America.
