Victor Rabinowitz Obituary

RABINOWITZ--Victor. The members and staff of Rabinowitz, Boudin, Standard, Krinsky & Lieberman mourn the death of the firm's founding partner, Victor Rabinowitz, at age 96. For decades, Victor courageously was in the forefront of the fight for civil liberties when only a few were willing to stand up to the onslaught of the McCarthy era. He believed that his task was not only to expose the law's inequities but "to carry on the necessary legal activities in a professionally competent and politically principled fashion." For more than six decades, Victor did precisely that--representing with extraordinary skill and commitment the militant labor movement, the targets of McCarthy-era repression, the civil rights movement, Vietnam-era protesters, Cuba and Allende's Chile. He served as an inspiration, teacher, mentor and friend to several generations of young lawyers, in our office and in the National Lawyer's Guild, who hope to use their talents and careers in the service of something more important than the pursuit of money and status. We will miss Victor, and we will try to carry on as he would have wished. Victor's family will be holding a memorial sometime in January. The family has asked that anyone wishing to remember Victor with a contribution, to consider the L. M. Rabinowitz Foundation, 18 Fountain Street, Clinton, NY 13323.
