WALTER MELVIN

MELVIN--Walter Jr. Walter Basil Melvin Jr. passed away in East Lansing, Michigan, on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the age of 80. Walter is lovingly remembered by his sons, John Melvin of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mark Melvin of Litchfield, Connecticut, his brother Frederick Melvin of Pittsfield, Maine, and his grandchildren Anastasia Melvin, Michael Melvin, and Carolyn Melvin. Walter was born in Bangor, Maine, graduated from Bangor High School in 1960, and received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 1965. In 1975 Walter started the Manhattan architecture firm, Walter B. Melvin Architects, a leader in the field of preservation and restoration of New York's historic buildings, museums, and monuments. Among the numerous awards received by the firm, notable recognitions of Walter's impact on the New York streetscape include the Historic Districts Council's 2008 Landmarks Lion Award, Landmark West!'s 2016 Unsung Hero Award, and The New York Society of Architects 2013 Sidney L. Strauss Award. Walter retired from professional life in 2017. A memorial for Walter will be held on Saturday, November 19th at 11:00am at Grace Church, 10th Street and Broadway in New York City.
