WARREN CHRISTOPHER Obituary

CHRISTOPHER--Warren. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) mourns the passing of Warren Christopher. Secretary Christopher led a long and distinguished career as a statesman, diplomat, and lawyer. A dedicated member of CFR for close to 40 years, Secretary Christopher served on the Board of Directors from 1982 to 1991 and as vice chairman from 1987 to 1991, and in recent years was active in CFR's West Coast activities. We are truly grateful for his service to the Council, his community, and most importantly, to his country. We offer our heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Marie, and other members of his family. Mr. Christopher was larger than life. An authentic hero, on the world stage and in person. He would have been my first choice for the United States Supreme Court. I was truly honored to meet him at the Kennedy School. He famously said, "A liberal is someone who won't take his own position in an argument" ...one of my favorite and most oft quoted aphorisms. Its relevance only grows with time. Thank you sir for all the above. And to his family, thank you for sharing him.

As U.S. Secretary of State, Warren Christopher always put others ahead of himself. His quiet dignity and leadership honored the work of others ahead of his own.

His humility clearly made the people around feel like equals. He set a high standard for all who would engage in leadership dealing with international relations.

Sincerely,

David Randal Allen
State Department Correspondent
1992-1995

Growing up in metropolitan Los Angeles, I witnessed and read about Warren's leadership as he shaped the course of local history. His quiet, steady presence defined culture in this region for decades.

Worshiping with him at his church underscored the quiet faith and steadfastness of his leadership style which was called upon repeatedly by our nation's leaders.

Today there are few civil servants who walk in his footsteps. My hope and prayer is that his legacy will impress others to lead and serve this nation with the same heart-felt values that he offered so willingly.

Grateful to God for his witness and service;
Reverend Douglas Guthery Edwards

March 18, 2011 - Los Angeles, CA - I first came to know Warren when I was a Director at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Over the years, he became a powerful force in U.S. politics in a number of capacities under Presidents Carter, Reagan and Clinton.

However, nothing is more revealing of his character, tenacity, insight and courage as he worked late into the night to successfully secure the release of the U.S. Hostages in Iran.

To Marie and her family, I offer my deepest condolences. Warren will always be known as a World Class Statesman and a man of great intellect who deserves the respect and honor not only of the American people but by that of the World Community as well. America has lost a dear and loyal friend. -Fred Brito

My most sincere sympathy to the Christopher family. I met him only once, during the federal shutdown in 1995. As a staffer to an assistant secretary, I was declared "essential", and sent down to Consular Affairs to expedite emergency passports. So much urgent travel to Columbia that week-- go figure. Sect. Christopher came down and shook hands with every one of us who was working there. Just a very human gesture from a very humane person. I'll never forget it.
