William, words cannot express my gratitude for your friendship. I am thankful for our beautiful lunches and walks in New York while I was working in Manhattan, and for the times I would stay with you on East 10th Street. Whether you knew it or not, you were there for me during some very difficult times with sage advice and wisdom. I will treasure our connection - for things French, for Edmund White, for sharing meals and walks. New York has lost one of its true gentlemen and an emblem of all that make New York a special place. May you be in peace now and forever. Fondly, Matthew
