WILLIAM STUBENBORD Obituary

STUBENBORD--William T., M.D. Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague Dr. William Stubenbord. An esteemed surgeon and dedicated educator, Dr. Stubenbord or "Stuby," as he was known to many, demonstrated a steadfast commitment to our institutions for more than half a century. Stuby graduated from Weill Cornell Medical College in 1962 and completed his surgical residency training at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in 1968. After service in the Army Reserve Medical Corps, Stuby returned to Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell in 1970 as an assistant professor of surgery and assistant attending surgeon. A pioneer in the field of transplant surgery, he was critical to the development of Weill Cornell Medicine's and NewYork- Presbyterian's renal transplant program and served as chief of our Division of Transplantation from 1996-2005 and acting chair of the Department of Surgery from 2002-2004. He retired in 2005 after a distinguished career. A fixture and beloved member of our institutions, Stuby was actively engaged in our community and was a founding co-chair of Weill Cornell Medicine's Lewis Atterbury Stimson Society for planned giving. The Department of Surgery has honored Dr. Stubenbord since his retirement with the William T. Stubenbord, MD Resident Award, presented annually to a resident who most embodies Stuby's characteristics: "gifted surgeon, remarkable teacher, compassionate physician." Stuby had an innate ability to develop close relationships with those around him, with a warmth and generosity that extended to everyone he encountered. He maintained many of those close ties, even after his retirement, and would visit often, asking for the latest news. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife Jane, daughters Elizabeth and Pamela, his family and friends. Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi, Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean, Weill Cornell Medicine Dr. Steven J. Corwin, President and CEO, NewYork-Presbyterian Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi, Chairman, Department of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medicine; Surgeon-in-Chief, NewYork-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center

Dr Stubenbord is one of my heros he gave me my kidney transplant Jan 11, 1990 I've been thinking about him lately I knew he retired in the 90s but i just felt like reading about his accomplishments, when I just came across this article. He always treated me nice & took the time to speak with me.
I am saddened to know that he has passed. I pray he went peacefully. Rest in Heavenly Peace Doc Forever grateful for the 32 1/2 yr & counting. With kind regards Linda Marchak
