WILSON ALLING Obituary

ALLING--Wilson S., died on Friday, October 5th, outside on a beautiful afternoon at his home in Greenwich, CT. He was born on May 30, 1943 in Montclair, NJ near where his ancestors established a farm in 1639. He graduated from Montclair Academy and Gettysburg College. He began his teaching career at Riverdale Country School in 1966. He earned a Master's Degree at Columbia University and moved to Connecticut in 1974, joining Greenwich Country Day School as Head of the Upper School. He taught English, coached lacrosse and served in a variety of administrative positions including Assistant Head until 1995. Between 1980 and 1982 he took a sabbatical to study with Rev. Terry Fullam at St. Paul's Church in Darien, learn to read Hebrew at Temple Shalom in Greenwich and work on the pediatric service at Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan. For 10 years he was co-owner with four close friends of an observant Jewish, co-ed summer camp in Monroe, NY. His family summers were spent in Westhampton Beach. In 1979, he purchased a small island in Maine and over the next decades built a solar-powered summer home, hosting scores of family and friends. Some of the most wonderful friendships of his life were with the local fisherman and builders and their families in the community of St. George, ME. He had a deep, abiding interest in the spiritual dimension of the human experience and studied eastern religion during his time at Riverdale. For the past eight years, he worshipped at the Islamic Center in Stamford, CT at the regular Friday prayers, learning the third Abrahamic tradition. He was equally comfortable attending a Catholic mass or joining the Episcopalian services in which he was raised. He read through the Bible, The Quran, the Bhagavad Gita numerous times as well as hundreds of religious texts, always looking for the correspondences rather than the points of separation in the different faiths. This lifelong study shaped his perspective of living. He is survived by his beloved wife of 15 years, Patricia Lansburgh Alling; her two daughters Nikki Malcolm of Park City, UT and Ashley Malcolm Laakso of Park City, UT, Ashley's husband, Thomas, and their three daughters, Paige, Reese and Blake, all of whom he loved as his own children and grandchildren; his sisters Susan Miller, Dr. Stearly Holt, and his brother Dr. Frederic Alling; eight nieces and nephews, 15 great nieces and nephews and two great-great nephews, one great-great niece; and hundreds of friends whom he dearly loved. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent payable to the "Wilson S. Alling Fund", P.O. Box 484, Greenwich, CT 06836, from which gifts will be sent to the many not-for-profit organizations to which Wilson was consistently committed. Wilson's presence will be sorely missed, yet he will abide in the hearts of his family and friends.

Mr. Alling, as we knew him in 5th grade at Riverdale Country School in 1968, asked his students to compare and contrast McCartney´s Yesterday and Lennon´s I Am the Walrus. I don´t remember what we came up with but I have always remembered the exercise, from a time when a friend was sent home for wearing a turtleneck instead of the required shirt and tie. Alling was clearly enlightened in ways we didn´t quite yet understand, spreading his enlightenment in what I soon recognized as subtilely subversive

I was shocked and deeply saddened today to hear of Wilson's passing earlier in October. I met Wilson while an incoming 7th grader at Riverdale Country School in 1971. I arrived at RCS academicaly confused having spent my previous school years in french/english bilingual schools. Without Wilson's intervention and his dedication to me I would never have succeeded in acclimating to RCS' academic demands. In fact, I am certain the skills I learned from him contributed to my success throughout high school, college and my business career. We stayed close over the next 41 years despite his move to Greenwich and my world travels. Wilson was always there for me when I needed advice and a kind word. I miss Wilson greatly and will never forget him.

In my thoughts of Wilson there are no words to express enough this kind, warm and giving gentle man. He was the shepard with his flock, arms outstretched and for those in need ,gathering them close. My children ,John, Deven , Tally and Kemper carry within the treasured gift of Wilson. Tally and Wilson shared a unique bond .G.C.D.S. ,summers in Maine and years beyond into his college years. The light of this gentle man was felt and shined on so, so many. Our love to Patty, his family and to all who have been blessed to know him. We have and shall always hold him so dear in our hearts.....Cindy ( Gaston ) Morris

I first met Wilson at the annual HBA picnics held on Ram Island. I later had the privilege of doing some projects and Wilson and I became very good friends. I also met Dakota Wilson's 4 legged companion. Dakota and I would share coffee and lunch breaks. She would also meet me when I arrived and would see me off when I left. Time went on and Dakota passed on early one Summer. She went on ahead. Wilson called me and said next time you are in town I need you to help me with something on Ram. I went out and was met on the deck by Wilson and Patty. Wilson was holding a box. He said inside are the remains of Dakota. I had a lump in my throat. Wilson said we are going to take these ashes one handful at a time and make a path around the house. We all grab a handful and started around the house. the lump soon gave way to tears. We finished the circle and Wilson said Dakota's spirit surrounds this house and it will protect all who come here. I was humbled this day because Wilson had done this, humbled because he asked me to participate and humbled because I did participate. Thank you for the many lessons you have given me and your friendship. I am going to miss you and you will never be forgotten. Your spirit like Dakota's will forever be in our hearts. Rest in Peace my friend.

Wilson Alling was the most sterling of persons, full of varied interests, special insights and such a wonderful role model to all who crossed paths with him during his G.C.D.S. years. His generosity and graciousness will always be with those whom he instructed in ways both small and grand.

Wilson touched our hearts and souls. We will always look out at Ram island with fond memories. Mark will blow the horn as he heads out to sea. Wilson and Patty's wakeup call as if the sound of the boat diesel engines hadn't already done the job. Our summer days will never be the same. We will miss their daily visits, picking up mail, groceries or ordering supper for their company. We not only miss Wilson but we will miss Patty, their family and friends. Summers will never be the same for us.
Our hearts go out to Patty and the family and all his friends.
