WOLF HEYDEBRAND Obituary

HEYDEBRAND--Wolf V. Died at home in Greenwich Village on January 14, 2019. Wolf was born in Germany on the Polish border in 1930. He studied at European universities in Marburg, Innsbruck, Zurich, Paris and Frankfurt. In 1954 he emigrated to the United States to accept a fellowship at the University of Chicago from which he received his PhD in 1965. He taught at Chicago and Washington University (St. Louis) then found his intellectual home at NYU in 1971. During his career at NYU Wolf had visiting appointments at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Onati, Spain, the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and was the Max Weber Visiting Professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, among others. He retired from NYU in 2003 and became Professor Emeritus. Like many who lived through WWII Wolf reinvented himself when he came to America. He changed his name, his religion, and his nationality. He fully embraced America while always remaining a citizen of the world. He is survived by his daughter, Gitry with his first wife, Ruth Keiling (deceased) and his wife of 31 years, Elizabeth Robinson and their children, Daniel and Sophia (Emre). He lived a long and interesting life and was well loved. A memorial will be planned in February.

Wolf was a great influence on his students at NYU who acknowledged his talents as a lecturer of social organizations and inspired those who took his classes. He was kind, thoughtful, patient, and thoroughly devoted to social justice and a true scientist of sociology. I had the honor of taking his course and sad to learn that he is gone.

In 1990 Wolf invited me to give a lecture course at NYU on my research into globalization. Coming from London, I will always remember the kindness with which Wolf and Liz made me feel at home, and the intellectual stimulation of conversations on almost everything - a widely read and travelled man. A true scholar.

I am very sad to hear that Wolf is gone. In 1990 he invited me to NYU to give a series of lectures on my research on globalization.

Yesterday, I learned about Wolf's death. In the eighties, I took a number of Wolf's classes while I was a graduate student in the NYU sociology department. He was a passionate advocate for social change and radical insight. He went out of his way to make me feel welcome, something I don't think I appreciated as much then as I do today. He will always be in my thoughts.

Wolf was a sociologist in the great tradition of Max Weber. His contributions to the sociology of law - above all the book, Rationalizing Justice - remain vital to this day. I was honored to call him my colleague.

Wolf's passing is a great loss. He was a friend and supporter for so many years; gifted and sharing. Farewell to a great man.
