ZINA JASPER Obituary

JASPER--Zina. Zina Jasper, age 84, died peacefully at home on June 8, 2023. She is survived by her devoted friends and students and her dear dog, Misha. Zina was the daughter of Anna and Jack Jasper, Russian emigres and was born in the Bronx. She became an actress and studied with Stella Adler and Harold Clurman. She felt lucky and inspired for the great parts that came her way. She won an Outer Critics Circle Award in Jerome Kass's SATURDAY NIGHT at the Sheridan Square Playhouse (1968) and performed at the Arena Stage in Washington in Twelfth Night directed by Jeff Bleckner and under the direction of Adrian Hall at Trinity Rep performed in Lillian Hellman's Little Foxes and Another Part of the Forrest in repertory. In New York she performed at the WPA Theater in My Mother My Father and Me (1980) A Different Moon by Ara Watson (1983) and directed The Alto Part (1983) and Starting Monday with Ellen Green (1990). She was in the original cast of On Golden Pond with Frances Sternhagen at the Hudson Guild, Artichoke and Quail Southwest (1977) at Manhattan Theater Club, Moon Dreamers at La Mama (1969) A Dream Out of Time at the Promenade (1970) to name a few. But her true love and gift was as a teacher of acting. She started teaching in 1983, as well as developing a steady coaching career. She never trained or taught institutionally, which was in step with her independent and eccentric spirit. She read plays voraciously and brought a kindness and patience to her teaching that enabled her students to make artistic breakthroughs, develop their craft, and find employment. She was a great lover of animals, rescued 124 stray or abandoned dogs and found homes for them, fed birds in Riverside Park, who could see her silver mane from a distance and would swoop down as she walked on West End Avenue. She sponsored many children for decades and believed in charitable giving and doing good deeds. Her generosity extended in numerous directions and included the many offspring of her students. She was modest about not needing to be visible after she discovered the joys of teaching, although there were always requests for her to return to acting, she gracefully declined. It was a great delight to her to share a birthday with Anton Chekov, her favorite playwright. A treasured quote from Henry David Thoreau was framed in her home "If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours...If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." Donations can be made in her name to the following: The Humane Society, Best Friends Animal Society, ASPCA, Save The Children, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, International Rescue Committee, Doctors Without Borders, Southern Poverty Law Center, Alzheimer's Association NYC.

You met my mother at 14yr old and taught her some much. After my mother passed we lost contact. I wish I had gotten to meet you again before you passed as an adult. To me you will always be my grandma Zina in New York with her Poodles.

My husband Gil and I met Zina as newlyweds when we became neighbors at 11 Riverside Drive. We thought that we wanted a puppy, and before we knew it, Zina had found "Lucy" - a sadly ridiculous looking chihuahua and corgi mix - tied up to the office of a local veterinarian. When we said that Lucy wasn't exactly the type of dog we had in mind, she laughed in that wonderful giggle of hers and purred - just keep her for a week. Of course we fell in love with Lucy that week, and thereafter Zina would help take care by walking Lucy while we were at work, and occasionally feeding her some of her homemade chicken soup. Zina showered us with love, affection and her special Russian warmth, and honestly, one of the hardest things about leaving New York was saying good-bye to our dear neighbor. We are so sad to hear of her death, but are grateful knowing that so many others were touched during her life by this very special woman. Rest in Peace, Zina.

I just found out about dear Zina. She was a long-time friend, and we share the same philosophy of life of kindness and caring for others, and a love for animals. We never missed calling each other on our birthdays and would enjoy long conversations. Her dedication and ability to inspire her students will be forever a lasting legacy. She was gift person in so many ways
and will be dearly missed.

I just found out about Zina's passing. She was an inspiration and one of the kindest people I've ever met. She was an incredible teacher who cared so deeply for her students and wanted them to always learn and grow.

I will miss you, Zina....

It was my work as Stage Manager at Trinity Rep. in Rhode Island that my relationship with Zina began and continued for years. I learned a great deal about life and friendships. I did get to speak with her recently; a short phone call. A great lady. A wonderful friend. I will continue to think of her.

Zina was my acting coach/teacher and a very close friend. She also was (at times) a second Mother and even a match maker. She was a great humanitarian. She was my core shaker who changed my life forever. I'm so lucky to have met you and so grateful to have you in my life. I will always love you Zina and forever miss you. RIP with all the other Stars.

I didn’t know she had passed until I read
her obituary. We spoke a few months
ago and she was fine..We were first
cousins and I was very fond of her..
She was a beautiful person kind and
caring..I remember when we were young
she would take the train from the Bronx
By herself to visit my family in Brooklyn..
I loved talking with her about our family.
She will be missed.. so sad..
