Batey Moore Gresham, Jr.
April 5, 1934 - August 6, 2022
Mr. Gresham died Saturday, August 6, in Auburn, AL. He was born April 5, 1934 in Lebanon, TN to Mr. and Mrs. Batey Gresham, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents. After graduating from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, he enrolled in Auburn University in 1952. An architecture major, he was active in many campus activities, including President of Kappa Sigma social fraternity, ROTC, Editor of Glomerata, and was one of 10 seniors selected as a Spade.
He met his future wife, Ann Weaver, at Auburn, and they were married on November 6, 1957. He and Ann moved to Ft. Hood, TX where Batey served his country in the U.S. Army and was later called back into service during the Berlin Crisis.
Batey and Ann moved to Nashville, TN where he was a founding partner of Gresham and Smith, an international design firm. While in Nashville, Batey and Ann were active members of Hillsboro Church of Christ, and Batey was very active in the Nashville community as a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary, Young Presidents Organization(YPO) and Chief Executive Officers(CEO), member of Canby-Robinson Society of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Cumberland University Trustees, Health Care Realty Trust Board member, Tennessee President of AIA, Auburn Alumni President of Nashville, and AIA Architect of the Year for Alabama in 2011. In addition, he and Ann were strong supporters of Chi Omega, and he was involved in the building of the Executive Headquarters in Memphis, TN.
Batey was the President of the Auburn Alumni Association and served on the Board. In 2005 he received the Auburn University Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a founding member of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts in Auburn and served as a member of the museum board. Batey's firm designed the museum, and he was personally involved in the design. Batey and Ann established the first endowed professorship in Auburn University's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (APLA), and he was in the CADC Dean's Club.
In 2013, Batey and Ann retired to Auburn where he was a member of the Auburn Church of Christ, the Kappa Sigma Alumni Association and House Corporation Board.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann. In addition, he is survived by family including Barbara Higgins(Bill) of Auburn and his Chi Omega "daughters" Suzanne Rich Miller(Rhett) of Dallas, TX; Anne Johnson Schultz(George) of Nashville, TN; Anna Funderburk Buckner(Bo) of Auburn, AL; and grandchildren Anne Miller Morris(Michael), Rhett Anderson Miller IV(Morgan) and J.R Buckner. Great grandchildren Jack William Morris and Catherine Anne Morris.
There will be a private funeral service followed by a reception for family and friends at Fig and Ivy on Wednesday, August 10 between 11:30 am-1:00 pm. 2290 Moores Mill Road, in Auburn.
