Douglas Benefield Obituary

Douglas Vas "D.V." Benefield Funeral services for Douglas Vas "D.V." Benefield, 89, of Roanoke will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 at Quattlebaum Funeral Home with Reverend Stanley Yarborough officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2006 at Quattlebaum Funeral Home. Mr. Benefield, who was born April 4, 1917, to the late Lawson D. and Bertha Wilson Benefield in Randolph County, died Nov. 29, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lorena in 1999. Mr. Benefield served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII having his ship sank by a Japanese torpedo. Prior to the war he was in the Coast Guard stationed in Woodshole, MA where he met his wife. He was a Mason for over fifty years. Survivors include his daughter, Linda (Mutt) Thomas of Opelika, AL; son, John (Susan) Benefield of Middletown, CT; five grandchildren, Michael (Brandy) Vecchio of Marietta, GA, D. J. "Doug" Vecchio of Deerfield Beach, FL, Carolyn (Ronny) Lee of Sharpsburg, GA, Sheri (John) Pardus of Framington, CT, Justin Benefield of Summerville, SC; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Jackson of LaGrange, GA, Orene Crenshaw of Wedowee; three brothers, Ralph (Sara) Benefield of Wedowee, E.Z. (Bobbie) Benefield of Lineville, Donald (Alyce) Benefield of Wedowee, along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
