George Kozlowski Obituary

George A. Kozlowski, Jr.

March 11, 1941 - October 16, 2021

George was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to George and Stella Kozlowski. He grew up in Hartford and then attended Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) as a scholarship student. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with distinction in mathematics and was named a National Science Foundation Fellow for graduate study at the University of Michigan. After earning his PhD there, he did two years of post-graduate research with Dr. Marston Morse at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

George's academic career included teaching and research at the University of Washington, where he also enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing. His great passions, however, were conducting research in topology, working with his colleagues in mathematics at Auburn University, and sharing his knowledge with graduate students. He continued his interest in mathematics after retiring in 2007 and was actively collaborating with others in his field when he died.

George married Yvonne Bessette, his wife for 59 years, his senior year at Wesleyan. They had been friends since high school and both shared a love of learning. Besides Yvonne, he leaves his two daughters, Pam Kozlowski and Lisa Marie Kozlowski.

George was a wonderful husband, father, and friend and will be sorely missed.

Ivonne and family,
I have just learned of George's passing. I want to say that of all the chairs of Mathematics he and Ben Fitzpatrick were my favorites. George was unusually perceptive as chairs go, and I consider him to be as close a colleague as I had at Auburn. His sense of justice, right and wrong, tempered by practicality was exceptional. When you look at people through hindsight you tend to remember the decent people more than the rest and George was one such person. I also enjoyed many mathematical discussions with George despite the differences in interests. He was a wonderful mathematician and leader.

Sincerely,
Thomas H. Pate

Some of my happiest memories of our time in Auburn from 1987 through 1990 are talking with George--and having a delightful debate about Hamlet's age being a detail where Shakespeare must have erred in judgment. It was so much fun debating that I did not want to go over to his side--and of course George was correct: the Bard surely did nod! Stephen and I remember so many delightful evenings with George and Yvonne, and we'll always treasure them.
