James Brown Obituary

1920-2008 Funeral services for James Gordon Brown, age 87 of Opelika will be Friday, February 22, 2008, 1:00 p.m. at the Tenth Street Church of Christ in Opelika with Minister Claude Flynn officiating. Burial will follow in Garden Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 21, 2008, 6-8:00 p.m. at the Tenth Street Church of Christ. Mr. Brown was born in Opelika, Alabama September 11, 1920. He was the youngest son in a family of three boys and one girl. His father was Gordon Brown, who owned a farm in the Beauregard community and his mother was Betty Owsley Brown. His older brother Curtis Brown is deceased and also his brother Robert Brown was killed in World War II at Sainte Lo, France in 1944. His older sister, Alma Sanders, survives him and resides at Oak Park Healthcare in Auburn, AL. James was married to Mary Elizabeth Palmer of Hamilton, AL on February 25, 1941 and was married 65 years. They had their first son, James Roger on December 10, 1941. A second son, Gregory Hugh was born August 9, 1948. Mr. Brown served in the United States Army in World War II and was wounded in action December 31, 1944. He served with General George C. Patton's 3rd Army which releived and helped win the battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium. For over 40 years, James and Elizabeth were in the grocery business in Opelika and owned James Brown's Supermarket. They also owned and operated one of the most popular restaurants in the area, James Brown's Family restaurant which served the regions best Southern Style cooking. James passed away February 18, 2008 from cancer while under Hospice care at Oak Park Healthcare in Auburn, AL. He is survived by his youngest son, Gregory who is an artist in Montgomery, AL. His oldest son, James Roger Brown was an internationally known artist who passed away November 22, 1997. James' beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Palmer Brown passed away July 18, 2006.
