April 25, 1926 - March 7, 2023
Jean Prather passed away peacefully at home in Auburn on March 7, 2023, at the age of 96.
Jean was born in 1926, to Edward and Willie Duck and grew up in the tiny community of Elder, near Dadeville, Alabama. She went to high school in Dadeville, where she met the love of her life, Roy D. Prather.
She completed a degree in bookkeeping at Southern Union and worked for the Chambers County welfare department for a time. Jean and Roy married in 1949 and eventually moved to Auburn, where he completed his pharmacy degree.
Many people remember Jean from the years, she worked as the bookkeeper for their family business, Glendean Drugs in Auburn, while raising their daughter, Wanda.
Jean also had many friends from her longtime association with the Auburn United Methodist Church. After her husband's death in 1991, she spent many happy years volunteering in the church office, answering the phones and helping with many other administrative tasks until ill health forced her to retire.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Wanda Prather of Columbia, MD.
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m., on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home in Opelika. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the food pantry at AUMC. Visit www.aumc.net/give and click on Memorials to donate.

Wanda,
I was saddened to hear of your Mother´s passing. I do know she endured the long battle with such strength and courage that I will not ever forget as such an example of her faith that God would take care of her. She contributed so much to our church and to those she touched along the way. God bless her, and you Wanda.

Mrs. Prather was always kind and welcoming when I would be in their home with Wanda as children. A sweet woman.
