NANCY JOHNSON MILLY February 11, 1928 January 28, 2010 Nancy Lee Johnson Milly, 81, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Nancy's gift with words landed her a job editing the newspaper in Lynchburg, Virginia. One assignment allowed her to obtain her pilot's license where she soloed at the age of 21. She obtained an Aeronautical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech in 1949. When Kennedy's speech inspired Americans to race to the moon, she and her husband, John, moved to Huntsville in 1960 with their 5 children, to work for NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center. Retiring from NASA, they moved to Panama City, Florida in 1981. In Panama City, Nancy volunteered with the American Red Cross, the IRS Volunteer Tax Program, Noah's Ark Blood Pressure Screening, and Literacy Volunteers of America where she tutored in math. She was an avid bowler and member of the Panama City Women's Bowling Association Board of Directors and was secretary and president of multiple bowling leagues. Nancy and John together were awarded the Red Cross Volunteer of the Year award in 1993 for their years of service. In addition, over a lifetime, Nancy donated over 12.5 gallons (100 pints) of blood. Nancy is survived by her husband, John; sons, Stephen, David and Peter, all of Huntsville; daughters, Teresa of Los Altos, CA and Kathryn of Auburn, AL; brothers, Neal Johnson of Great Barrington, MA, Tom Johnson of Fredericksburg, VA and Joseph Johnson of Dallas, TX; sister, Mary Pons of Kennebunk, ME; nine grandchildren and 4½ great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Chaney Thompson Rd., Huntsville. No flowers please, however, donations in her memory may be made to the American Red Cross.
