WESLEY GLISSON Obituary

WESLEY CLAYTON GLISSON MAY 15, 1961 - NOVEMBER 25, 2011 Wesley Clayton Glisson went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 25, 2011. He was born to Elder Huey Long Glisson and Loette Vaughan Glisson in Thomaston, Georgia, on May 15, 1961. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Rose Neugent Glisson along with his three sons, John Clayton Glisson, Kyle Chambless Glisson and Lucas Clark Glisson. Other survivors include his father, Huey Long Glisson, three brothers, Emory Bruce (Karen) Glisson, John Vaughan (Patti) Glisson, and George Michael (Cory) Glisson-Munier, numerous extended family members and cherished friends. His mother, Annie Loette Vaughan Glisson, preceded him in death. Wes loved his family and treasured his sons above all others. He valued the time he spent at the lake with family and friends, as well as ski and scuba trips with his family. Wes was a member of the Auburn United Methodist Church and Promise Keepers Bible Study. He enjoyed tennis and running, giving up one for the other as his knees and ankles aged. Wes attended school in Johnson and Glascock counties in Georgia, graduating high school in 1979. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in 1983 and his doctorate from the Medical College of Georgia in 1987. After completing his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1991, he began his practice of medicine in Rome, Georgia. In 1992, Wes moved his Radiation Oncology practice to Opelika, Alabama, at the East Alabama Medical Center. He joined a skilled team of caretakers and built a thriving practice serving the East Alabama community. A memorial service will be held in the Auburn United Methodist Church on Monday, November 28, at noon. Visitation will be prior to the service at 11 a.m. in the Mathison Lobby of the Auburn United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be directed to the East Alabama Medical Center Foundation, the AUMC Food Pantry, or the Lee County Humane Society. In honor of Wes, please wear Red and Black as often as you think of him. He loved his Georgia Bulldogs! Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home & Crematory Opelika, Alabama is directing. www.jeffcoattrant.com

I met Wes shortly after he moved to Auburn. I was playing tennis and he drove up in a red Mercedes with a UGA tag on the front. Being a fellow Dawg,
I knew that this must be a special person. And, he was playing with a Georgia Tech alum and staunch supporter
so I knew that he must be a very accepting person. Fortunately, I became friends with Wes and I got to know how really special he was. I could
write volumes about the many fine qualities of Wes Glisson but the best thing I can say about Wes is that he was as good a person as I have ever known. I was privileged to be his friend.

Four years ago my husband was told he had a lung tumor and should check in at EAMC. Little did we know the cancer had metastasized and he had only 3 weeks to live. Dr. Glisson's kind, compasionate care made all the difference in the world. His gentle honesty helped guide me to make good decisions about my husband's care during his final days. Even when we checked David into Bethany House, Dr. Glisson still came to see us. He always wanted us to know that he could alleviate my husband's pain, whatever it took to do that. He was deeply concerned that my husband not suffer needlessly, and he tried valiantly in his efforts. He was a peaceful, calming presence to me, and had such a great impact on our lives. I will always be grateful to him and I will never forget him. He is with our Lord now. God bless and comfort his family and friends.

To the Glisson Family. David and I hold you in our thoughts and prayers. Though Dr. Glisson was not our doctor, when reading about him from a colleague in the editorial section of the OA News yesterday, Dec 7, I feel a great warmth toward him and what he caringly did for his patients. I do know him, however, from AUMC and am so blessed to have worked with Shirley Rose (another wonderfully caring person) at the Food Pantry, and occasionally run into her at Auburn University in the halls. Our hearts go out to all of you at this very difficult time. You all have made a difference in so many of our lives. Our love, condolences and prayers go out to all of you.

I have witnessed Dr. Wes Glisson's compassion, caring and medical expertise to all patients. Dr. Glisson was an expert in oncology, a very intelligent physician but was always down to earth and spent time with his patients. He was an exceptional physician and person. He was very kind, sincere and caring to many cancer patients in the East Alabama area. He will be greatly missed by his patients, the medical community, and all those who have known him. For the past two years I thank God every day for the healing of my fiance's cancer, but over the past few days I thank God we found Dr. Glisson when we did, he was the only Dr. that my fiance trusted (probably because he was a Georgia Bulldog fan) Dr. Glisson was always there to answer our questions no matter how big or small. Dr. Glisson was always so understanding, compassionate and caring, he will be missed greatly. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Glisson family in this time of loss.

Throughout the years at UGA and the Medical College of Georgia, Wes was always an inspiration to me. He never seemed to lose his focus on his goals but was always able to tackle any problem without losing his unusual sense of humor. From the "green desk" nights of studying at the science library to the backpacking trips on the Appalachian Trail, he was always my friend and brother. I will miss him.

Dr.Glisson's calm, patient and caring approach helped us so much when we were upset at my husband's diagnosis of cancer. I was teaching in Atlanta at the time and he stayed after hours to meet with us when I could get there and to patiently go over all our options. He never acted as if it was an imposition. He treated my husband with great expertise and we are so thankful for the 10 years of worry free life after cancer. He was a wonderful doctor and will be greatly missed by the medical field and his patients. May his family find some peace in God's love.

Nearly two years ago my mother was given unthinkable news-that she had stage 4 oral cancer. Thereafter, due to her age, a team of experts were assigned to her care all of who gave up. Dr. Glisson told her that "I think I can save you if you are able to withstand the 33 sessions of radiations while maintaining your weight." My mother fulfilled her end of the agreement and is still here. I promised Dr. Glisson his bragging rights which were given to him in early 2011. From the Bell Family, we are sorry for your loss. To the spouse and children, may God give you strength. Dr. Glisson was a wonderful physician who was soft spoken. He gave us a second chance with our mother and we are ever so thankful.
